Omar Badrin - Cry Baby

Humber Galleries is launching a fresh new vision with our fall show. We are declaring our earnest affection for creative people who help us see to the world and ourselves differently.

Into You is a group exhibition presented across our two locations, Fall in Deep at North Space and On the Edge at L Space. Crushes can be confusing, exciting, and all-consuming—like being on the edge of a great void and surrendering to an intense feeling. The desire to be accepted by someone else can amplify self-conscious feelings of difference. And yet, as revolutionary poet Sonia Sanchez has written, ‘you can’t have relationships with other people until you give birth to yourself.’ Into You highlights artmaking as a meditative act of self-discovery. Like any great infatuation, the deeper one goes, the more there is to discover.

Featuring works by Omar Badrin, Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, Francisco-Fernando Granados, Allyson Mitchell, Jagdeep Raina, and Xiaojing Yan, Into You dives deep into the compulsion to create variations of forms that are strangely attractive. They beg to be noticed. Through pastel drawings, crochet, sculpted paper, found textiles, video, and digital drawings on an iPhone, each artist tells a story about themselves, their communities, and how others see them. On the Edge at L Space explores visibility and invisibility at the margins. Who or what goes unnoticed, blends in, and stands out? Fall in Deep at the North Space houses cocoons and second skins. These are protective spaces for transformation, becoming, and turning inward in total surrender. Together, the exhibitions are about belonging on one’s own terms.

The following information is about our part-time TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program leading to TESL Canada certification offered in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Over the past few years faculty and staff from Math, Liberal Studies, French, English, GAS, Health Sciences, HRT and our Administration have taken the program and received TESL training qualifying for TESL Canada certification. With so many international students in our colleges and universities these days, TESL training is no longer just for ESL teachers. TESL training provides any instructor with a solid base in teaching methodology, foundations of the English language, and ways to work with and support ESL students in your classes, no matter the subject area.

There are five required courses in our part-time TESOL program: two in-class, two online and a 20 hour practicum which can be completed in one of our Humber ESL classes. Each class is 30 hours in length and runs over a period of five weeks. In-class courses run on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The courses are offered each semester, so you can complete the program at your own pace, in one, two, three or more semesters. Upon successful completion of all five courses, you can then apply to TESL Canada for certification. Being TESL certified also opens the door if you ever wish to teach overseas. For those instructors without any formal teacher training, this is also a great way to enhance your resume with a teaching credential. For Humber staff or instructors interested in the program, we will waive the $50 registration fee and cover the cost of the teaching practicum, the last course in the program. Unfortunately, as this is a non-funded CE program, the $20 tuition fee does not apply. Each course is $295.00. The link below will provide you with more information about the certificate and the individual courses.

Fall classes begin on September 18.

If you would like more information, or are interested in registering for the program, please contact me directly.
