The final exam period is upon us, and as a result, Testing Services will be operating at maximum capacity over the next two weeks.

In order to ensure that students can complete final assessments over the next few weeks, we request that faculty submit the exams a few days in advance to ensure a seamless check in process. Please ensure the referral form is completed with all permitted materials and accommodation details for each student, as we will only provide students to test with materials and details outlined on this form.

The Lakeshore Campus Testing Centre will be extremely busy the week of December 5-9. We will see upwards of 150 students per day in the Lakeshore Test Centre

The North Campus Testing Centre will be extremely busy the week of December 12-16. We see upwards of 500 students per day at the North Test Centre

Information for Faculty:

  • If you are a faculty member dropping off our picking up exams from our Centres, you do not need to wait in line, please come right in!
  • We anticipate longer than normal wait times for students – typically around 45 minutes during peak times (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). We encourage students to come early to test, as they will have to wait in line.
  • If you are submitting an electronic test, it must be submitted by 7 a.m. on the day of the test. For more information on the electronic test submission, please click: humber.ca/student-life/testing-services/services-faculty/electronic-test-submission
  • If you are submitting a paper test, please do so at least 1 business day prior to testing.

Thank you in advance!

Humber is becoming a greener campus and everyone is participating! Humber Sustainability Highlights feature people and departments around the College integrating sustainable practices. This month’s focus is the Greenhouses and the Locavore Garden run by the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology.

It is the way of biology: all plants on Earth begin as little seedlings. Valeria Wuschnakowski, Humber’s Greenhouse Technician, and her team of work study students from the Landscape Technician program start gardening by planting seeds at the College’s Greenhouses. As the plants become bigger, some are transferred over to the Locavore Garden in the Arboretum.

Whether it’s the plants or the setting, the Locavore Garden has many purposes.

  • The Landscape Technician and Horticulture Apprenticeship programs use the garden as a living classroom to identify edible plant species.
  • The Culinary Management students use produce from the garden for their culinary labs to create food and drinks for the Humber Room.
  • The Aboretum Nature Summer Camp and the Early Childhood Education program use the garden to teach children how food is grown.
  • The Aboriginal Resource Centre uses the garden to grow Indigenous plants.

The Greenhouses and the garden are maintained using innovative sustainable practices.

  • Two rain barrels are set up at the Greenhouses which are used to water the plants.
  • Only compost and manure are used as fertilizers.
  • There are no pesticides used.

On top of all the garden uses, the Humber Arboretum hosts two plant sales throughout the year: one in the winter and one in spring. However, this year we get a treat because the autumn semester will have the first ever plant sale!

Alexandra Link, Director of the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology, and Savio Colaco, Business Manager from the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism, say there are talks about expanding the garden within the next three years to grow more food to support the College’s programs and local community.

Once again The Department of Public Safety in partnership with The Toronto Police Service will be organizing and collecting toys for our annual #Santa9114Kids.

Last year was a huge success! A big thanks goes to the Humber College Community.

We were able to collect and donate hundreds of toys to several local hospitals, families, and single parents in the GTA that needed some help during the holiday season.

Please bring a new unwrapped toy to the Department of Public Safety in NX101 before Monday, December 12, 2016.

The toys will be delivered to the families and Humber River Hospital between December 15th and Wednesday December 21, 2015.

Once again thank you for the continued support!

As you are aware, Humber’s 2016-2021 Academic Plan is now finalized and available at humber.ca/about-humber/corporate-info/publications/files/humber-academic-plan-summary.pdf. As we now collectively focus our efforts on achieving the goals set out in the plan, I am pleased to announce that we will be initiating an Essential Skills strategy in support of Goal 7 of the Academic Plan. It is also my pleasure to announce that Vera Beletzan has been assigned to lead this special project beginning in the Winter 2017 semester.

Vera will be leading Humber’s Essential Skills strategy which will include the development of Humber’s Institutional Learning Outcomes framework for essential skills, as well as the development and implementation of an essential skills assessment process. Vera brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this role. Her past experience in this area includes a leadership role in the development of the Competencies Framework for Humber’s Co-Curricular Record. She is also currently a member of Humber’s research team working within HEQCO’s Learning Outcomes Assessment Consortium. As the Associate Dean of English, Vera oversees the development and delivery of essential skills in communications across Humber’s schools and programs and represents the college on the Ontario Colleges Language and Communications Council.

I invite you to join me in welcoming Vera to this role and look forward to engaging the entire Humber team in this important work in the months to come.

Warmest regards,

Laurie Rancourt
