It is with mixed emotions that I announce our Associate Dean, Vincent Shaikh, will be leaving Humber mid-August to pursue a wonderful and well-deserved opportunity as Dean of Media, Trades and Technology at Niagara College. Vincent has been a dedicated member of the Applied Technology family for five years and has had a profound impact on our school, particularly the work he did in developing our labs. It is sad to see him leave, but I am thrilled for him as he embarks on this new adventure.
Vincent's last day at Humber will be August 10. We hope you will be able to join us to thank him for his service. We are hosting a farewell drop-in on Thursday, August 9 at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Applied Technology's boardroom NX201A. For more information, please contact Julie Pasquin at julie.pasquin@humber.ca or x5622.
Vincent, we wish you all the best!
Sincerely,
Farzad Rayegani
Dean, School of Applied Technology
I am pleased and excited to announce the following changes to the Applied Research and Innovation Department:
Tanya Perdikoulias has agreed to accept a secondment to serve in the critical role of Operations Manager. Tanya joined Humber College in 2011 and through her support of the senior executive team, she has worked with all academic schools and departments across the college. Prior to her work at Humber, she worked at the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto and with the Ontario government in the Health Boards Secretariat.
Tanya has a diverse set of experiences in postsecondary education, provincial government, international government, and the financial sector. Through this, she brings a unique interest in policies and procedures. Recently, Tanya became a proud Humber College graduate in the CE Photography Certificate program and is currently pursuing a certificate in project management.
Jaqueline Nicol has accepted the full-time position of Operations & REB Coordinator. Jaqueline comes to us from the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism where she provided program support to students, faculty, and program coordinators. Over the past year, Jaqueline has become an integral part of the Applied Research and innovation (ARI) team. Jaqueline will be responsible for the coordinating administrative activities for ARI, supporting a wide range of research initiatives and projects, and supporting the development and implementation of effective administrative procedures for ARI. Jaqueline will also coordinate and provide administrative support for the Humber Research Ethics Board.
Duarte Ribeiro has agreed to join the Applied Research & Innovation team as the full-time ARI Financial Administrator. Duarte first joined Humber two years ago as a Research Assistant for ARI, assisting with a wide range of administrative and financial activities for the office. He then took on the role of Finance & Operations Analyst at ARI, as he excelled in key areas such as purchasing, tracking, internal reporting and financial monitoring. Duarte has over 10 years' experience in the banking industry working in various roles such as customer service representative, branch ambassador and fraud analyst with CIBC. Duarte has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Ryerson University where he received a major in Economics and minor in Marketing.
Please join me in extending a warm welcome to the new members of the Applied Research and innovation team.
Dr. Darren Lawless
Dean, Applied Researcher and Innovation
Please note that Arboretum Blvd will be closed along the Parking Garage construction site on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. See attached diagram.
- All vehicles that require access to Parking Lot 1, the Residence Buildings, Humber’s Child Daycare, and Humber Arboretum & Centre for Urban Ecology must use Entrance ‘E’ from Humber College Blvd.
- The closure is necessary to accommodate a portable crane on the Arboretum Blvd roadway to install structural components of the rooftop solar array on the new parking garage. A second road closure will be required later in August 2018.
- The road may reopen earlier in the day if possible.
In 2016, Humber College, in partnership with The City of Toronto’s Youth Equity Strategy, Amadeusz, and The Laidlaw Foundation, launched a research project titled Look at my Life: Youth Identified ‘Sparks’ for Firearm Possession Among Young People in Toronto.
Tina-Nadia Gopal-Chambers, a faculty member in the School of Social and Community Services, was the Principal Researcher on the project. The research findings were released this week which identified the following influences that contribute to young people becoming involved in crime:
- Risk factors, including trauma, family environment, lack of non-family adults/mentors, lack of community programs, negative peers, and negative school experiences;
- Systemic barriers, including racism, poverty, lack of community safety; and
- Barriers after being incarcerated, including accessing employment due to a criminal record and a lack of education, and returning to the same environment with little support.
A copy of the report is available at: amadeusz.ca/research-2.
Humber College Applied Research & Innovation is proud to be a key partner on this timely research and we thank Tina-Nadia Gopal-Chambers for her contributions.
Reminder
Humber faculty and textbook/course materials decision makers,
The staff at both the North and Lakeshore Campus Stores would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we are currently accepting book orders for the Fall 2018 semester. We respectfully request that you submit your requests as soon as possilbe. Receiving your list of required course materials allows us to source all available options (new, used, print, digital, etc.) for incoming students, as well as provide the optimum value to students who are selling books. Timely submission of requests ensures that we have plenty of time to source and order all of your materials before the start of Fall classes. Currently, we have received 30% of the requests at Lakeshore Campus and 40 per cent at North Campus.
Over the past decade publishers have implemented a wide variety of delivery options for their course materials. Each version has its own unique ISBN as an identifier. The Campus Store has the ability to provide all options for the majority of materials requested
- Print textbooks (hardcover, soft cover and loose leaf)
- Custom textbooks (reduced chapters or combination of multiple texts into a single volume)
- Bundles - two or more print components, or a print version with a code to access online content. Please let us know if the online content is required for your course or simply recommended. This will assist us in providing more price options for your students.
- Digital - PDF or Adaptive Learning version (i.e. MyLab, Connect, Wiley Plus, etc.)
To submit your list of course materials you may use our Online Adoption tool. To access to this service for the North Campus, please visit humbershop.ca. For the Lakeshore Campus please visit humberlakeshoreshop.ca. Scroll to the bottom of either homepage and from under the heading Faculty Services, select Online Adoptions. You will be asked to login or register. For first time users, the generic password is 0947, and for Lakeshore it is 0948. If you prefer a paper copy of your previous term information, either store this information upon request.
Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. We are here to answer your questions and will gladly walk you through the online adoption process should you require assistance. We look forward to receiving your list of Fall course materials.
