Humber Libraries is very excited to announce that starting in May, authentication to our eResources will leverage your Humber username and password, not your library account.

This means that you will now get seamless library access both on and off campus if you are already logged in.

Note: a library account is still required to use the physical collection.

Watch this video for a demonstration. We would like to thank the Information Technology Department for making this change a reality.

To faculty with eReading pages or streaming video links in Blackboard:

  • Contact copyright@humber.ca to take advantage of this new method of access for your students.
  • Links using the barcode/PIN access method will still work to give everyone time to update.

After 14 years of dedicated service, Basil Guinane, Associate Dean in charge of the Communications cluster of programs, has decided to retire effective August 31, 2016. During the last 14 years, the School of Media Studies & Information Technology has experienced immense growth and a profound transformation. Basil’s leadership has been instrumental in supporting the successful evolution of the school into a leading-edge Media & Information Technology school in the Canadian educational landscape.

Leading the largest cluster of programs in the school, Basil’s contributions have been significant and many. He supported his team in the development of innovative and exciting new programming including the Bachelor’s Degrees in Journalism; Film & Media Production; and most recently, Digital Communications. Among other notable accomplishments, he also led the development of the most successful Media Foundations program in the GTA, and implemented a number of forward-thinking initiatives such as launching the first ever fullyonline graduate certificate program at Humber- the MultiPlatform Storytelling Graduate Certificate- and the annual Transmedia Fellowship.

Prior to Humber, Basil had a long, exciting, and interesting career in such esteemed publications as the National Post, Maclean’s, and the Globe and Mail.

Please join me in congratulating Basil on his retirement and wishing him well in this new stage of his life. He will be missed. Thank you Basil!

The International Centre is proud to share student success stories. Studying abroad, away from home and your family and friends, can be challenging. The International Centre is here to offer support!

This month, Victor Wang, an Electromechanical Engineering – Automation and Robotics student from China talks about his experience at Humber:

“I’m really happy that I chose to study at Humber. I believe that to be successful in your academic studies, you have to be really interested in what you’re studying, and I love my program. Your interest will motivate you, enable you to succeed and prepare you for your future working career.”

Last week, Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan announced that the Government of Canada will launch the application process for a $2 billion fund aimed at improving research and innovation infrastructure at colleges and universities across Canada.

The Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund will help modernize and improve the environmental sustainability of research facilities at campuses throughout Canada. More specifically, according to the Ministry of Science, the program will support projects that:

  • Improve the scale or quality of facilities for research and innovation, including commercialization spaces
  • Improve the scale or quality of facilities for specialized training at colleges focused on industry needs; or
  • Improve the environmental sustainability of research, innovation or training infrastructure

This is an important step in acknowledging that innovation and research are key components of Canada’s ongoing economic growth, and Humber is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this new funding opportunity. With extensive partnerships with industry and the community, we are set to help foster collaboration, create a new generation of skilled workers, and help drive Ontario and Canada’s prosperity.

We are now assessing projects that could be eligible for funding through this new initiative, and will update you as work progresses.

For more information, go to the Post-Secondary Institutes Strategic Investment Fund website.

Since our founding in 1967, Humber College has become a recognized leader in postsecondary education with a proud polytechnic identity. In recent years, we have seen unprecedented growth and demand and now serve more than 29,000 full-time students across our eight academic schools. There is much to be proud of and we couldn’t have done it without the hard work and contributions of our people.

In recognition of our long serving employees, we are offering a one-time Voluntary Retirement Program to those who are eligible to retire with an unreduced CAAT pension as of March 31, 2016.

Long service and employee recognition are important to Humber. As we meet our commitments to student success, we must also honour the efforts and ideas of those who have brought Humber to where we are today. Humber is committed to investing in our employees and this offer is an expression of that commitment.  This program recognizes our long service employees while providing new opportunities for others. As employees participate in this program, know that we have a commitment to maintain the level of full-time complements across Humber.

Choosing when to retire is a personal decision. We are offering the Voluntary Retirement Program to our full-time employees who are eligible to retire with an unreduced pension as of March 31, 2016. Those identified as eligible will receive a letter mailed to their home address informing them of their eligibility for the program. Please note that approvals are subject to eligibility and operational requirements.

Thank you all for your continued hard work and bringing your best to Humber every day.
