Humber Galleries and Collection is pleased to announce the installation of Vancouver-based artist Ben Skinner’s sculpture Colour Field (2014) at Humber’s Lakeshore Campus at the main entrance to L Building. This dynamic piece featuring 2,698 coloured pencils in 58 unique shades is a particularly engaging welcome to Humber students, staff and faculty as well as the broader Lakeshore community. The artwork cleverly flips the instruments of art making into the art object itself, playful inviting viewers to consider the categories of everyday items in a new light.

Ben Skinner grew up in a small oil town in Southern Ontario. He graduated with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Art from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax in 2000, and with an MFA in Art & Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. The artist is represented by Mayberry Fine Art in Toronto, K.Imperial Fine Art in San Fransisco and Hazan Projects in New York. His upcoming solo show, BEN SKINNER: I WILL NOT BE ENTRANCED BY NOSTALGIA opens Saturday, April 9th in Toronto at Mayberry Fine Art and runs until April 30th, 2016.

We are delighted to introduce this work in its permanent location at the main entrance of the Lakeshore campus’s L building.

The Humber Galleries and Collection provides creative programming and access to artwork for Humber College and the greater community. Our galleries, L Space and North, are located at the Lakeshore and North campuses respectively and act as cultural hubs for discovering new artistic and creative connections to curriculum. The Humber Galleries Art Collection complements these activities by offering students, staff and faculty the opportunity to encounter art around the campuses, making it part of the day-to-day culture of the college, but also providing access to integrated curriculum planning, student research and skills development.

There are very few people who can say that they spent their entire life with one organization and yet had the opportunity to reinvent themselves, take on new positions and in so doing, indirectly affect the lives of thousands. Cynthia Wilson is one of those individuals and it is with much admiration that I share with you the fact that one of Humber’s unofficial matriarchs has decided to retire effective August 31, 2016.

For more than 40 years, Cynthia has called Humber a second home. As a student and as an employee, she has seen the College grow and change dramatically over the last 4 decades. With each and every change, she has stayed true to her commitment to service excellence. She first began her career at Humber in 1976 after accepting a position as a Typist-Stenographer in the Principal’s Office, North Campus. It was as a result of the training, coaching and mentoring that she received from her colleagues in the Principal’s office that she developed many of the skills by which she is known at Humber: her attention to detail, service commitment and institutional knowledge. Within a short period of time she advanced and was promoted to administrative assistant in what was then renamed the Office of the Vice President Academic and continued to support the operations of that office where her ability to function independently and assume new responsibilities were always noted.

From the Office of the Vice President Academic to the Office of the Dean, Human Studies, and then to the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, from the position of typist to administrative assistant to business manager, Cynthia has often taken on the role of coach, guide, mentor and friend to many across the institution. She has been all of these things to me since I joined Humber in January 2009. She has never once said she is too busy or turned someone away when they had a question or needed her assistance. She has always been willing to help because she only knows how to give 150% each and every day, and the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Humber have benefited from her exceptional dedication and strong work ethic.

Please join me in congratulating Cynthia on her dedication and commitment to Humber and in wishing her only the best as she begins the next chapter of her life.

Sincerely,

Paula Gouveia
Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Purchasing Services has been working with Sales Dynamics and Staples Promotional Products (formally known as Accolade Promotion Group) to support Humber’s Sustainability initiatives by reducing the amount of paper being processed in Financial Services. In order to achieve this, we have moved to a monthly payment process.

How it works: when you contact Sales Dynamics or Staples Promotional Products to order products they will request a FOAP for the order to be charged to. Payments to the vendors and charges to the FOAPs you supplied to the vendors will be processed on a monthly basis. This process is similar to that of the Culligan for water coolers, Staples Advantage for office supplies, Grenville for printing, and Chartwells for catering.

Benefits of the new Process:

  • Reduce the amount of paper invoices being issued – Supports our Sustainability initiatives
  • End users will no longer need to process requisitions or LVPO for each order
  • Reduces AP workload and time of payment process

Items to remember:

  • We have four Vendors of Record for Promotional Items
    • Akran Marketing
    • Sales Dynamics
    • Staples Promotional Products
    • The Branding Company
  • At this time, only Sales Dynamics and Staples Promotional Products are using this new process
  • You can still place orders using your MasterCard with all four vendors
  • You can find a complete list of all Purchasing’s vendors of records with their contact information on the resources tab on the Finance Website humber.ca/finance/resources

Please contact Jessica Powell if you have any additional questions at jessica.powell@humber.ca or 416.675.6622 x5172.

Note for all Banner Users – Shipping Information

This is a friendly reminder for all Banner users who create requisitions and LVPOs in Banner to please make sure that when you are creating requisitions and/or LVPOs to make sure you correct the shipping information. Receiving has been experiencing many issues due to the wrong delivery information being provided on shipments. Please make sure that you identify the correct campus (North Campus, Lakeshore Campus, or Carrier Drive) that orders are to go to, and the correct contact information.

Did you know that you can add additional information to all requisitions and LVPOs?
If you need to provide more detail for your orders whether it be delivery instructions or item descriptions, there is an option for you to add “Document Text” to your orders.

How do you add document text?
When you are entering your information in Banner and you have finished entering your information for the item(s) being ordered on the “Commodity/Account” tab, you click on “Options” at the top of the screen, and then click on “Document Text”. This will bring you to another page that will have your document number and the vendor name on it. You will then need to click next block and it will bring you to the first text line which you can then start adding your additional information. Once you have finished adding all the information, click the save button, and then you can exit out of this page. When you click on the black X to exit, it will bring you back to the “Commodity/Accounting” tab of your document and you can continue to complete your requisition or LVPO. Please see below the screen shots of the process for a requisition, which is the same for the LVPO.
