The gifts that teachers give to students don’t usually come wrapped in shiny paper or tied in a fancy bow. You won’t find them under a tree, or stuffed in a stocking.

Teachers’ gifts are things like knowledge. Shared passion for a particular discipline or subject. Support and guidance, both academic and personal. A love of learning.

For more than 20 years, teaching more than 45 courses at Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber (U of GH), professor Dan Andreae has given all those gifts to his students.

This year, a few weeks before Christmas, he decided to give Humber students a different sort of present.

Andreae, currently a psychology professor at U of GH, has established the Dr. Dan Andreae Scholarships, an endowment of $250,000 that will fund three annual awards for students taking courses associated with Humber’s School of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

“I believe in Humber, and I believe in what we’re doing here,” explains Andreae. “During my time here, I’ve supported scholarships for students, and I decided that I wanted to do more – that I really wanted to help students, to encourage and inspire them. Over years of attending awards nights I’ve seen that the kind of confidence-building that comes with receiving a scholarship is irreplaceable.”

The awards will recognize academic achievement within the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences in three categories. One is for a mature student who has overcome significant difficulties in order to attend Humber, one is for a student who is in a psychology course and the third is for a student who has demonstrated leadership within Humber or their community.

For Paula Gouveia, dean of the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the awards reflect Andreae’s approach to education and his dedication to his students.

“Dan, whose background is in social work, believes in elevating his students. These awards speak to what he believes in, as an individual and as a faculty member,” says Gouveia. “Through this award, and through his involvement in so many diverse programs, he  has helped our students achieve and be so much more than they thought was possible.”

Andreae’s endowment is the largest single gift that Humber has ever received from an individual donor. He says he’d like to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to the Humber community.

“Giving back, whether you’re giving money or time, is incredibly important, so I’d like to inspire others to give and help students,” says Andreae, who has twice won the University of Guelph-Humber’s Faculty of the Year award. “Just to know students are being helped means the most to me. I chose Humber because I want to see Humber, and its students, grow and evolve.”

Full Moon The moon is at its greatest visibility.
Birth of Guru Gobind Singh Ji (Sikhism)
The tenth and final Sikh master created the Khalsa, the Brotherhood of the Pure, and declared the Scriptures, the Adi Granth, to be the Sikh's Guru from that time on.
Mahayana New Year (Buddhism)
Celebrated on the first full moon in January for Mahayana Buddhists (Tibet, China, Vietnam and Korea), Confucians and Daoists.

Christmas / Epiphany / 3 Kings Day (Christianity)
Eastern: Some churches celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus; some celebrate Epiphany, the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. Some Western & South American churches celebrate Epiphany or 3 Kings Day when wise men from the East visited Bethlehem with gifts for the Christ child.

Christmas / Nativity (Christianity-Eastern)
Eastern Orthodox and Coptic (Egyptian) churches celebrate Christmas or Nativity according to the Julian calendar, 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar (Dec 25) used by Western churches.

Baptism of the Lord Jesus(Christianity)
Celebrates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.

Seijin no hi or Coming-of-Age Day (Shinto)

The International Student and Staff/Faculty/Admin Buddy program is designed to enhance the experience of international students at Humber College ITAL. We hope that this will be accomplished by creating an opportunity for faculty, staff, admin and seasoned international students to be part of a “Welcome Team” that will engage with new international students through informal, personalized and friendly social interactions.

WHY?

  1. To improve the social, psychological and academic performance of international students as they transition to life in Canada and at Humber College ITAL.
  2. To enhance the feeling of hospitality on campus for new international students.
  3. To enhance the intercultural experience and cross-cultural knowledge  of staff and faculty. Participation in this program will allow faculty, staff  and admin to enrich their intercultural perspectives and communication skills while gaining a greater understanding of the goals, motivations and difficulties experienced by international students

WHO CAN BE PART OF THE WELCOME TEAM?
The project will be open to all interested full and part-time faculty, staff and admin at Humber College ITAL. (Participation in the program is entirely voluntary.)

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

  1. Attend the Meet & Greet session.
  2. Attend at least two (2) Buddy Program organized events during each term (e.g. Initial Meet & Greet, International Cafe, Pot Luck Dinner etc.).
  3. Meet with your buddy at least two (2) times outside of any Buddy Program organized event during each term.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Youssef A. Youssef as Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Commerce – Marketing degree program at the Lakeshore campus.

Youssef has been with The Business School at Humber College for the past 3 years as a Professor in the Bachelor of Commerce programs.  In addition to his other credentials, he earned a PhD in Management from The Federal University of Santa Catharina in Brazil.

1. Customer Service Standard Training
The Customer Service Standard Training was the first mandatory training to be released under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005) (AODA). All Humber employees who are full time, part-time, sessional, contract and work-study students are required to complete the AODA Customer Service Standard Online Training.

2. Training for Educators
The Training for Educators is the second mandatory training to be released under the AODA, and requires Humber College to provide educators with accessibility awareness training related to accessible program or course delivery and instruction. All full-time, part-time, sessional and contract educators, instructors, facilitators, presenters, curriculum developers and tutors are required to complete the online Accessibility Awareness Training for Educators.

3. Integrated Awareness Standard Regulation/Ontario
Human Rights Code Training (IASR/OHRC) The IASR/OHRC is the third mandatory training that was released on Humber’s Human Rights, Equity & Diversity web site in July 2014. All employees who are full-time, parttime, sessional, contract and work-study students are required to complete the IASR/OHRC Training.

Please note:

  • All employees who fall under the category of “Educators” must complete all three (3) training modules.
  • All other employees must complete only two training modules: (1) Customer Service and (3) IASR/OHRC.

Environmental scanning is an important and ongoing activity that supports strategic planning, institutional decision-making and resource allocation. In partnership with data holders from across the college, the Strategic Planning & Institutional Analysis (SPIA) unit collects, analyzes and communicates institutional data related to students, faculty, programs and finances. These data are tracked and benchmarked over time, as we consider our reality in the context of our competitors both local and global.

The 2014 Environmental Scan was researched and developed over the summer of 2014 and serves as an update of the 2012 Environmental Scan, which was produced to share with the Humber Board of Governors, college leaders and the broader campus community in the very early stages of the 2012-13 strategic planning process undertaken to develop the 2013-18 Strategic Plan.
