The International Student and Staff/Faculty/Admin Buddy program is designed to enhance the experience of international students at Humber College ITAL. We hope that this will be accomplished by creating an opportunity for faculty, staff, admin and seasoned international students to be part of a “Welcome Team” that will engage with new international students through informal, personalized and friendly social interactions.

WHY?

  1. To improve the social, psychological and academic performance of international students as they transition to life in Canada and at Humber College ITAL.
  2. To enhance the feeling of hospitality on campus for new international students.
  3. To enhance the intercultural experience and cross-cultural knowledge  of staff and faculty. Participation in this program will allow faculty, staff  and admin to enrich their intercultural perspectives and communication skills while gaining a greater understanding of the goals, motivations and difficulties experienced by international students

WHO CAN BE PART OF THE WELCOME TEAM?
The project will be open to all interested full and part-time faculty, staff and admin at Humber College ITAL. (Participation in the program is entirely voluntary.)

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

  1. Attend the Meet & Greet session.
  2. Attend at least two (2) Buddy Program organized events during each term (e.g. Initial Meet & Greet, International Cafe, Pot Luck Dinner etc.).
  3. Meet with your buddy at least two (2) times outside of any Buddy Program organized event during each term.

The team at the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology (CUE) is very proud to announce that for the third consecutive year the CUE has achieved Platinum level certification under the Ontario EcoCentres certification program! To date the CUE is the only Outdoor Education Centre in Ontario that has achieved Platinum level certification 3 years in a row. This would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our team who are always coming up with new and interesting ways to promote the importance of a truly sustainable workplace environment and showcase our commitment to environmental education.

About the Ontario EcoCentres Program
The Ontario EcoCentres Network was created to assist learning centres in leading by example and reducing their environmental impact. The EcoCentres certification program provides staff and learners at sites across the province with a framework to address twelve areas of sustainability, including;

  • Teamwork and Professional Development
  • Occupancy Behaviour and Resource Conservation: Energy, Waste, and Water
  • Curriculum and Programming
  • Environmental Quality and Human Health
  • Procurement
  • Biodiversity and Sustainable Sites
  • Infrastructure Renewal and New Construction
  • Transportation and Fleet Services
  • Social Equity
  • Carbon Neutrality

By involving all aspects of a learning centre - from the building itself to the people within it - the Ontario EcoCentres Network seeks to support more efficient operations, cultivate deeply engaged learners and promote informed decision-making.

Did you know?

  • Humber’s Center for Urban Ecology is a great tool for teachers within Humber to show their students a real life example of what sustainability looks like in the world of business.

  • Within the past two years staff at the Centre for Urban Ecology have worked with many different sectors in Humber to help connect students with the Humber Arboretum and CUE through facilitating;
    • 41 Student Events
    • 32 Student Workshops
    • 30 Student Tours

What’s next?
We would like to increase the number of Humber students that the CUE works with, so we are encouraging all instructors within Humber to connect with us to see how we can help you implement sustainable, environmental, or place based education into your program.
If you are interested in more information on how to connect your program to the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology please contact us by phone at extension #5009 or e-mail us at arboretum@humber.ca.

Roberta will be filling the role of Customer Service Agent and Data Entry Clerk, and will be the main point of contact through the Facilities Help Desk, while Rajkumarie Sookraj is on maternity leave. For the month of January, Roberta will be working closely with Raj to get familiar with our programs, processes and the Humber community.

Roberta comes to us from Oakville Hydro where she held the position of Customer Service Representative assisting residents of the City with queries related to billing and service, account creation/changes and scheduling of meter readings etc. In addition to her experience with Oakville Hydro, Roberta has worked in customer service for the City of Brampton and Loyalty One, and has recently completed her Office Administration Diploma at Sheridan College.
