Humber will release its stand-alone Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence Policy and Procedures on Thursday, March 26 as part of a province-wide initiative on sexual assault spearheaded by Colleges Ontario and supported by Ontario’s 24 public colleges. The policy outlines the college’s commitment to assisting those who have experienced or witnessed sexual violence by ensuring a supportive environment for reporting, providing information and protecting individuals’ rights.

The policy, which was developed after extensive consultation with a range of Humber stakeholders, applies to all members of the Humber and Guelph-Humber community.

“The policy represents an institution-wide commitment to creating a culture where students feel safe reporting sexual violence, and we have had overwhelming support across the college,” says Jen McMillen, Humber's dean of students. “While it’s a policy in name, it really is a tool to change attitudes, behaviour and the wider culture around us.”

Humber has formed a working group of staff, students and faculty to facilitate the implementation of the policy. As well, the college will be introducing a Bystander Intervention training program, which builds on the “Can I Kiss You” educational program that is mandatory for all first-year residence students.

“Students, staff and faculty alike have been eager to participate in this dialogue,” says Corinna Fitzgerald, director of Student Life Programs and lead author of the policy. “The Humber community is ready to change the historical conversation about issues like consent and sexual violence.”

The Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence Policy and Procedures documents will be available online tomorrow. Check humber.ca/news for website details.

On March 18, 2015, The Business School Placement Centre hosted a Lunch & Learn for TJX Canada’s Retail Management Graduate Program (Winners, HomeSense, Marshalls).

The Retail Management Graduate Program offers graduates the opportunity to take on a management role at a retail location. Typically a retail manager is required to have 3-5 years of full-time work experience before they will be considered for a management role within TJX Canada. With their Retail Management Graduate Program, however, graduates are immediately considered for the role of either Assistant Manager of Customer Service & Operations or Assistant Manager of Merchandise.

At the event, we were joined by Natalie Sturino, Central Region Talent Acquisition Coordinator for TJX Canada, who is the recruiter for the graduate program. Also in attendance was Kristina Merciello, a graduate from Humber’s Fashion Management degree program. As the first Humber student accepted into the Retail Management Graduate Program, Kristina was able to share her success story with students and provide insight into her journey.

The Business School congratulates Arfah Sohail, Kyle Falzetta and Krishna Mohammed for placing 2nd in this year's CPA College Case Competition held this past weekend at Fanshawe College in London. These students prepared an outstanding presentation on the cost and environmental feasibility of new drinking water sources for the Canary Islands.

In addition, another team of Business School students -- Soniiya Jahangir, Catarina Vaz and Erica Veltri -- also delivered a great presentation and did an outstanding job representing Humber during the day.

All the students had a great time and described their participation in the CPA College Case Competition as a tremendous learning experience and really tied together the accounting knowledge they learning over the past 3 years at Humber.

The team was supported by accounting faculty members Dan Carli and Nick Bordignon.
