Workplace Rights and Responsibilities
Humber as the Employer
The OHSA sets out many duties, or responsibilities, that the employer must follow. The overriding purpose of these requirements is the creation and maintenance of a healthy and safe workplace. As an employer, Humber must:
- make sure workers know about hazards in the work they are doing by providing information, training, instruction and supervision on how to work safely
- create workplace health and safety policies and procedures and ensure that they are being followed
- ensure supervisors are competent, as defined in the OHSA, and that they know what is required to protect their workers’ health and safety
- ensure that the equipment, materials and protective devices, as prescribed by regulation, or required by Humber, are provided, used and maintained in good condition.
- provide information and assistance to our Joint Health and Safety Committee to allow the Committee to carry out its duties effectively
- advise workers about hazards in the work they are doing and respond to worker concerns
- show workers how to work safely and ensure that they follow the OHSA, applicable regulations and workplace policies and procedures
- make sure workers wear and use the proper protective equipment and devices correctly
- follow the OHSA and regulations as well as Humber policies and procedures
- report any hazards and injuries to their supervisor
- wear and use any required protective equipment
- work in a way that will not injure themselves or others: the OHSA prohibits a worker from using equipment in a manner that may endanger himself/herself or another worker and from engaging in any pranks or horseplay in the workplace
- know about existing and potential hazards in the workplace and how to protect themselves
- participate in health and safety; this may mean discussing safety issues with their supervisor or participating in Humber’s Joint Health and Safety Committee
- refuse unsafe work. See Humber’s refusal procedure for more details.
It is my sincere pleasure to announce that on November 25, Meg Houghton will assume the role of the Director of Student Access, Wellness and Development at Humber College. With a Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Colorado State University and 13 years of leadership in the post-secondary student services sector in Canada and the U.S.A., Meg is an exciting addition to the Student Success and Engagement team.
Hailing most recently from Durham College and UOIT where she was the Director of Disability Services, Meg brings comprehensive leadership experience in both college and university student affairs units overseeing accessibility, testing, health and counselling services. Meg is on the executive board of the Canadian Association of Disability Service Providers in Post-Secondary Education and the College Committee on Disability Issues in Ontario. She currently chairs the Social Innovation group of the Centre for Innovation in Post-Secondary Mental Health in Ontario. Meg has been active in promoting, publishing and presenting on Universal Design in post-secondary education. Equally as important, she loves talk radio, coffee and a well-delivered dry joke. Meg spends her downtime cycling, skiing and camping with friends and family.
Please join me in welcoming Meg to Humber, and the Student Access, Wellness and Development Team!

Yesterday at the annual Town of Orangeville's Economic Department Breakfast, the Humber Orangeville Campus was presented with a special 150 Sesquicentennial Commemorative Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Town of Orangeville and community.
On-hand to receive this award (and we didn't know Humber was going to be acknowledged at all) was Humber President, Chris Whitaker and Orangeville Campus Director, Joe Andrews along with Town of Orangeville Mayor, his Worship, Rob Adams.
This award capped off a wonderful morning where retired General Rick Hillier was the keynote speaker.
Humber is proud to be part of this community and is enhancing its commitment at the Orangeville Campus with the addition of new full-time programming in the fall 2014. Fitness and Health Promotion and Tourism Management will be added to the full-time program menu.

This was a very special window install for us because it is the first of its kind; a corporate sponsored window display featuring merchandise from Winners, HomeSense and Marshall's courtesy of our friends at TJX Canada. Alvina Cassiani, Dean, Humber College, The Business School and Connie McCulloch, Executive Vice President TJX Canada have forged a long term partnership that rewards talented students from Humber's fashion programs with employment opportunities at TJX Canada.
Students worked diligently shopping as many TJX locations in the GTA as possible to create the perfect looks for the window which featured English country cottage chic fashions to reflect the theme, "London Calling". Vintage trunks courtesy of HomeSense were purchased in volume to create an interesting travel prop for the mannequins who were perched on top of the trunks while viewing maps of the United Kingdom. The window display was professionally photographed and time lapse video was created to document the behind the scenes development of the window. Imagery offers students an amazing portfolio piece that they can use upon graduation when the search for meaningful work begins.
A follow up event at The Fashion Institute on October 10, 2013, introduced fashion students to the TJX Canada executive team. It was a great networking night for fashion students and a wonderful venue to showcase student work and the truly fabulous finds courtesy of Winners, HomeSense and Marshall's.
