Poster for Humber Arboretum Nature Day Camps. A collage of children are working with wood, watching a caterpillar, cradling a giant zucchini, taking photos of a pond, and looking in a pond dip net. The Centre for Urban Ecology, a White-tailed Deer, and a camp leader using his hands to mimic a deer's ears are also shown.

Summer Nature Camp returns to the Arb on July 10 with the first week's theme of "Healthy Planet, Healthy Lives."

Humber Arboretum day camps are based out of the Centre for Urban Ecology, but campers spend most of their time outdoors where they make their own discoveries in the forest, river, meadows, wetlands, gardens, and ponds of the Humber Arboretum.

Every week at Humber Arboretum Nature Camp includes nature walks, pond discovery, art and ecology, camp songs and games, and indoor swimming on Fridays. The weekly theme inspires other activities:

Healthy Planet, Healthy Lives - Monday, July 10 to Friday, July 14, 2023

This week campers will learn about the importance of nature in their lives and why it is essential to protect nature not only for ourselves but for the diversity of life that depends on it for survival. Through interactive games and activities campers will expand their knowledge in areas of health and wellness, waste reduction, ecological stewardship, and energy and water conservation to help them understand how our actions affect the health of the planet and show them ways that we can help make a positive impact at home and in our communities.

In our increasingly digitized world, we have access to more data than at any other point in human history. You would think that would make decision-making more manageable, or at least more precise – surprise! Unfortunately, an abundance of data requires more time and effort to separate the signal from the noise, which is a problem when working on a tight deadline. That’s where data storytelling comes in. This workshop will teach you how and where to find compelling data within and outside your organization. You will also use the tools and discover the best data analysis practices. You will then understand how to craft a compelling narrative for your research that complements your findings. By mixing aspects of journalism, OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) with hands-on data analysis training using Microsoft Excel and Tableau, this workshop will help participants develop a “data frame of mind” that will aid them in finding and telling stories with data.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Navigating and downloading open data catalogues
  • Learn how to request government data using freedom of information legislation
  • Fundamentals of data analysis with Microsoft Excel (Functions, Pivot Tables, PowerQuery)
  • Data Visualization and Presentation (Tableau)

Facilitators:

Barath Roy Michel is a Senior Project Manager who has demonstrated strong skill set in being able to categorize and segment innovation projects via phase gates. He also excels in the analysis of results on innovation assessments by using a variety of data analytics tools such as Excel, Tableau and Power BI. Post analysis, he has the ability to weave the insights together in the form of a wonderful story. He has presented to various clients, both international and domestic, on their current innovation capabilities, provided steps on improvement and measured success based on specific KPI’s.

David Weisz is a data journalist and educator passionate about storytelling, spreadsheets and pandas (both furry and Python varieties). David is also creator of Data Driven, Canada’s premier data journalism symposium. Currently exploring new ways to collaborate on data-driven storytelling as a co-founder and director of Humber College’s StoryLab.

Lunch will be provided. Registration deadline is Friday, June 30, 2023.

Humber's Digital Campus Plan focuses on digital fluency as a key priority for supporting equity, innovation, and success at Humber. Work is underway to identify and develop opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to gain and/or enhance their digital fluency skills.

To date, Humber has launched an environmental scan and now we'd like to invite all faculty and staff to join a conversation where we'll discuss what digital fluency means to Humber, how it is currently demonstrated in our daily work, and what support might be needed to help us prepare for the future (student consultations will occur separately).

Please join us for a facilitated discussion about digital fluency at Humber. There are several dates available (days and times listed below) where participants can share their thoughts, ask questions, and engage with each other about what we do and where we're headed.

Session options:

  • Thursday, June 15, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Friday, June 16, 2-3 p.m.
  • Monday, June 19, 10-11 a.m. or 2-3 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 27, 3-4 p.m.

To register for one of the sessions, please complete the following form by Tuesday, June 13. You will need your Humber credentials to access the registration form.

Closer to the date of your selected session, you will receive an email with the MS Teams link for the session and additional resources (including the environmental scan mentioned above) that provide context for the project.

We're looking forward to the conversation!

Data Driven 2023 text poster

Data Driven is a one-day event featuring some of Canada’s most prolific investigative reporters, news developers and data advocates providing an in-depth look into the strategies they use to turn raw data into tomorrow’s headlines.

For our first in-person event in three years, we’ll be moving to the Center for Social Innovation’s Spadina location. We’ll be doing things a bit differently this year, with a selection of hands-on workshops in the morning, followed by a catered lunch. In the afternoon, our popular Data-Driven Show ‘n’ Tell will feature journalists discussing a data journalism topic of their choice. Humour and spontaneity are encouraged – and expected.

Tickets:

In the morning, we have simultaneous sessions running and we kindly request that attendees choose only one workshop to participate in. However, the afternoon Show 'n' Tell is open to all participants.

Session 1: Workshop: How to archive and analyze social media with Bellingcat's Auto Archiver tool (10 a.m. - 12 p.m. EST)

Archiving and analyzing social media posts has long been one of the most painstaking tasks journalists can face in the newsroom. But it doesn’t have to be this way! In this intensive workshop, Bellingcat’s Tristan Lee will take you through the ins and outs of archiving specific content (single videos/social media posts), with Bellingcat’s Auto Archiver tool; ways of archiving larger-scale social media content (entire channel history, multiple channels, etc); as well as some analysis/visualization methods for making sense of larger-scale data.

(Limited space. Bring your own laptop.)

Session 2: Training: Google Journalists Studio (10 a.m. - 12 p.m. EST)

Have a whole whack of PDFs to parse through? Need to build an interactive data visualization on a deadline? Google Journalist Studio offers a selection of powerful tools to help journalists pursue data-driven stories. This year, Google’s Colleen Kimmett will lead a hands-on demonstration of two of these tools: Pinpoint and Flourish.

(Bring your own laptop.)

Session 3: Workshop: Use Google Sheets like a Globe and Mail Data Journalist (10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m EST)

In this hands-on workshop, Globe and Mail data journalists Mahima Singh and Yang Sun will show you how to recreate some of their favourite Globe data projects using Google Sheets. Beginners welcome, though some spreadsheet experience is recommended.

(Bring your own laptop.)
