IDW 2019 will consist of different events to bring about collaboration, awareness and knowledge generation. Participants will learn about the current issues surrounding international development and opportunities to engage in international development work through Humber.

Internationalization is one of the key priorities for Humber College and a goal of the Internationalization strategy.  Humber has been involved in international development projects for many years, and hosting IDW 2019 is one of the ways in which we support global engagement.

Google Forms is a simple and free way to collect, save and analyze student data. Use it to create class surveys, short quizzes, student inventories and much more. Use the information you collected to help you gauge your students’ understanding, class engagement and anything else you like.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to create Google Forms, how to make forms that are easily understandable, how to ask good questions and offer good answer choices. We’ll complete our overview of the tool by learning how to distribute surveys and collect answers.

Please note: to get the most out of this workshops, participants are strongly advised to bring their own laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

What would happen if the autism gene was eliminated from the gene pool? You would have a bunch of people standing around in a cave, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done! When it comes to solving problems, the skill sets people bring to the table are rooted in three different forms of cognition: photo realistic or visual thinking, pattern mathematical, and word verbal thinking. When projects are being designed, people with different ways of thinking have complementary skills.

Drawing on her own extraordinary life experiences, Dr. Grandin will discuss the challenges and opportunities for people like herself on the autism spectrum who think in pictures, championing the cause of neurodiversity: that the world needs all kinds of minds!

Trees grow tall on the edge of a pond

Come to the Humber Arboretum for a creative writing session where nature will be a source of inspiration, writing prompts will direct your thoughts, and your own creative spirit will do the writing.

Humber Arboretum Nature Interpreter Sunflower will guide you through the mindfulness practice of a sit spot inside the Centre for Urban Ecology, after which various prompts and examples will help facilitate your own writing. You will go home with your self-created masterpieces, along with tools and ideas to enhance your creative writing practice. The workshop will run indoors, and no previous writing experience required. Writing supplies and paper will be provided, but if you have your own favourite journal, feel free to bring it with you, along with a lunch. 

Lunch and Learns at the Humber Arboretum’s Centre for Urban Ecology offer free introductions to topics related to gardening, ecology, and sustainability. Bring your lunch and enjoy a casual learning environment overlooking the Arboretum grounds.

This event is free but space is limited - please register in advance through the Arboretum website.
