As a component of its capacity building initiatives for members of the Humber Community, the Humber Research Ethics Board (REB) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a webinar on Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The facilitator will be Dr. Matthew Lagrone and the title of his presentation will be “Generative AI for Efficient and Effective REB Applications: A Walkthrough”.
Dr. Lagrone is an expert in the field of AI research. In his presentation he will share useful insights that will provide Humber researchers with useful tips on the use of AI in preparing research ethics applications.
Dr. LaGrone is the Associate Dean, Faculty of Health and Community Studies, and Associate Professor, Human Services and Early Learning, at MacEwan University in Alberta. From 2013-2023, he was the Program Head, Liberal Studies, at the University of Guelph-Humber (and thus a proud Humber employee!). While at Guelph-Humber, he received a three-year University Teaching and Leadership Fellowship from the University of Guelph to support faculty in the creative and responsible integration of generative AI tools into their workflow, course materials, and class assessments.

The Matt Lagan Quartet opens Humber Music’s 2024-2025 Noon-Hour Concert Series.
Matt Lagan, saxophonist and electronic wind instrument (EWI) player leads this all-Humber-Alumni band which includes Sean Clarey on guitar, Scott Hunter on bass, and Louis Baranyi-Irvine on drums. An electronics-infused experimental jazz quartet, they perform original compositions and arrangements. Their November 6 concert will present works ranging from high-energy, bebop-influenced tunes to smokey, atmospheric pieces with a subtle groove, and takes place in the beautiful new Recital Hall located in the newly opened Humber Cultural Hub (HCH) at the Lakeshore Campus.
Matt is an internationally active saxophonist, EWI player and composer from Toronto. He graduated with honours from Humber Polytechnic in 2017 studying with Pat Labarbera, Kirk MacDonald, Alex Dean, Lorne Lofsky, Brian Dickinson and Neil Swainson, and was the recipient of the Hnatyshyn Oscar Peterson Award. In 2018, Matt joined the famous Toronto band The Shuffle Demons and has since recorded three albums with them and toured twelve countries around the world. Since 2019, Matt has been living in Europe between Germany, Italy and France. He is a member the Italian funk sensation C’amma Funk and has performed and recorded with great European musicians including Nathan Ott, Bela Meinberg, Louis Navarro, Irina Gonzalez, Vittorio Silvestri, Michael Santanastasio and Marco Di Tilla.

Annually, Humber Polytechnic participates in the Take Our Kids to Work Day. This is a hands-on experiential learning event for Grade 9 children of Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber employees.
This year, the program will be held on Wednesday, November 6 and will be hosted by Humber Polytechnic at the North Campus. If there is enough interest, we can accommodate facilitating the event at Lakeshore Campus. Interested employees that would like to participate, please email Humber Organizational Effectiveness at oe@humber.ca to note your interest, campus location, and educational programs and career paths that are of interest to your child.
Through this event, Grade 9 students will get an opportunity to explore a variety of careers and sectors and will learn what skills are important to thrive in the world of work. The goal of this event is to empower students to make informed decisions and ignite their curiosity of what is possible for their future.

The 2024 AMC (Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada) Hackathon is taking place on November 6 to 7 at the Barrett CTI (5th floor). It is an opportunity for Humber students to create and collaborate to solve a real-world industry problem in the field of agricultural manufacturing. Any registered Humber student is eligible to participate (they will compete in teams of four and will need to be supervised by either a Humber faculty, COI manager or any Humber staff).
Hackathon Date & Time
The hackathon problem will be announced at 9 a.m. on November 6, 2024 at the event (the problem will be announced on the 5th floor at the Barrett CTI and via a virtual link for participants that cannot attend in-person).
The prizes for the winning teams will be announced at 12 p.m. on November 7, 2024 after students present their solutions at this time.

Students will work on the Hackathon problem in teams of four students plus one Humber faculty/COI manager/staff. If you do not have a full team of four students, you will be assigned to a team.
Please note that if you have a full team, each student from the team is required to submit their own registration form.
