Humber College and the National Association of Broadcasters invite you to attend the Resilient Timing Solutions Seminar on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Humber College to learn more about the development of a new, robust, and independent timing solution known as Broadcast Positioning System (BPS) that utilizes the new ATSC 3.0 broadcast terrestrial transmission standard, also known as Next Gen TV.

Why should I attend?

For more than 40 years, GPS technology has improved our daily lives, including via the operations of numerous critical infrastructure sectors. The PNT (Position/Navigation/Timing) signals and other data from GPS satellites empower our infrastructure to function reliably. Without these vital timing capabilities, the Canadian and U.S. economies would come to a standstill.

While most people think of GPS as a tool for navigation in their vehicle or on their phone, the reliable delivery of time via GPS is so good that over time it has been adopted and enshrined in the operations of virtually every vital infrastructure sector. These include energy and power grid, wireless communications, financial (equity trades, credit card swipes), transportation (aviation, maritime, rail, surface, pipeline), first responder networks, public infrastructure including dams, information technology, critical defense, manufacturing, healthcare/public health, and food and agriculture to name several. All sectors suffer this common risk.

This dependency has grown so large that from a national security perspective it is now seen as a critical weakness. It is a challenge that exists in Canada and the U.S., and today there is not a resilient solution to augment acute outages or back up massive system failures. It is literally a trillion-dollar problem and Executive Order 13905 was issued in the U.S. to address this important issue.

We invite you to join us to hear from experts from the Canadian Federal Government, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Space Based PNT Advisory Board, Resilient Navigation and Timing Foundation, National Association of Broadcasters, Triveni Digital, Avateq Corp and Humber College B²C Lab including a demonstration of the latest research and development of a BPS resilient solution.

The LGBTQ+ Resource Center and The 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group will mark Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on Monday, November 20 and we invite the Humber community (staff, faculty and students) to join us.

About Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR)

Transgender Day of Remembrance (Monday, November 20) has been observed around the world since 1999. TDoR was created by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honour and memorialize Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was killed and subsequently since, this day is a vigil to commemorate the trans, Two-Spirit, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people’s lives that were lost in acts of transphobia and anti-trans violence.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we come together as a community to raise awareness about transphobia and prejudice resulting in anti-trans hate crimes and multiple lost lives. We also carve out time and space to honor and commemorate the loss of trans lives, particularly those of trans women of colour, that are often dismissed by mainstream media despite many being at the forefront of queer and trans liberation justice movements. Finally, this is a specific day of significance to express our love and care for the victims of transphobic violence and trans antagonism through honoring their lives and personhood as a community.

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber will be recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 by lowering flags at our campuses to half-staff.

You can join in several events both in-person at the North and Lakeshore campuses.

Indigenous Knowledges Gathering banner

Beginning in 2014 as a vision to bring Indigenous students, educators, and communities together, the Indigenous Knowledges Gathering (IKG) embraced Indigenous knowledge transfer, celebrating and sharing innovative practices in the field of Indigenous education. From panel discussions to hands-on workshops and keynote presentations, IKG brings together a diverse range of Knowledge Holders, Elders, scholars, students and communities to share the successes, challenges, strategies and possible future directions of Indigenous education. Growing from 120 participants in 2014, to 1,600+ participants in recent years due to the introduction of livestream viewing, IKG is well known for its innovative content, networking opportunities, and community-friendly atmosphere.

This year’s IKG will bring together a diverse array of storytellers with the theme: What Our Ancestors Know: Teaching and Learning through Storytelling. #IKG2023 will be a dynamic event with various opportunities to hear from diverse leaders as they share the importance of truth and autonomy in storytelling and education. Attendees will be able to hear the unique perspectives and traditional knowledges that exist across Indigenous nations at this year's gathering. This event offers insights for members of the Humber community and beyond.

Through various panels, keynotes and workshops, attendees will be able to learn from Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and gain insight from valued members of the Humber community. By including the diverse voices of those who have practiced relationship building founded on respect and reciprocity with Indigenous peoples, those who attend will be able to look through the lens the College has been utilizing when working alongside Indigenous Communities.

Registration details will be announced through the Communiqué. To stay up-to-date with IKG 2023 information, follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook and/or Instagram).
