Learning and Development Mastering Minutes and Note Taking Workshop

Being able to focus on and précis relevant information is critical to producing effective notes and minutes. In this intensive, interactive workshop, participants review note taking strategies and apply summarizing and revising skills to record effective meeting minutes. 

Specifically, participants will be able to: 

  • Apply active listening skills
  • Apply note taking techniques
  • Apply summarizing, paraphrasing and précis writing skills
  • Use common shorthand strategies and symbols 
  • Use templates appropriate to audience and purpose
  • Revise for clarity and conciseness 
  • Create readable meeting minutes

Inclusive Curricular Design encompasses the key elements of multiple teaching and learning approaches to offer a robust and accessible learning experience for all students. The principles of inclusive curriculum design focus on a proactive rather than reactive approach to course design and are founded in equity, collaboration, flexibility and accountability. This Certificate addresses the idea that students are not meant to fit into a traditional “one size fits all” model of education and that applying the principles of inclusive design will ensure that the range of student diversities, abilities, and needs are being met through a number of teaching and learning strategies.

The Certificate is comprised of seven 3-hour learning modules, a coaching session, and a reflection activity. Upon successful completion of these components, participants receive a Certificate of Completion.

This Certificate has been accredited by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) - Educational Developers Caucus (EDC) of Canada to ensure quality in teaching and learning. For more information, please visit EDC Accreditation information.

Note: The modules must be taken in the following order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

ICDC Module 1: Foundations of Inclusive Design This module explores the role of inclusive design in optimizing the experience of all learners. Participants will be introduced to the universal design for learning (UDL) guidelines, which will be applied throughout the Inclusive Curricular Design Certificate program. Participants will also explore the post-secondary student experience through discussion and simulation and will reflect on the importance of adopting inclusive design practices.

This module introduces the fundamentals of planning instruction with a focus on inclusive design principles. Participants will discuss and reflect on barriers faced by students, and the importance of using learning outcomes to achieve flexible curriculum alignment.

This second “Planning Instruction” module continues to explore the application of inclusive design principles to reach all learners. Participants will discuss and apply strategies for proactive, student-focused course and lesson design, including the creation of accessible documents.

Assessing Learning Part One and Part Two 

This module introduces the fundamentals of assessment with a focus on authentic and differentiated assessment to maximize student achievement and engagement. Participants will explore assessment types and the importance of motivation when creating authentic and inclusive assessments.  

This second “Assessing Learning” module continues to explore the fundamentals of assessment. Participants will discuss strategies and tools to measure learning outcomes and revise their own assessments to integrate inclusive design principles. This module will also focus on inclusive design strategies that can reduce the need for in-class and testing accommodations by making classroom tasks and assessments accessible to all learners.

Whether you're curious about those birdwatchers you see with the giant lenses and scopes, are already a birder yourself who's looking for tips, or if you just love a good adventure story, come to the Humber Arboretum on Wednesday, May 16 at 6 p.m. for a free talk by Ontario Big Year record-holder Jeremy Bensette! Point Pelee area birder and naturalist Bensette had a very successful year in 2017, travelling to the far reaches of Ontario in pursuit of every bird species he could possibly cross paths with. This presentation touches on many of the highlights, lowlights, statistics, results, and antics of his very social birding journey that set a new provincial record!

This event is co-presented by the Humber Arboretum and Bird Studies Canada as part of the Toronto Bird Celebration running May 12-27, 2018.

The talk is approximately an hour then will be followed by an informal Q&A or, weather-permitting, a tour of the Humber Arboretum grounds with Jeremy.

Lunch and Learn Session Nutrition and Stress Relief for Drained Brain

These days it seems like almost everything we do leaves us feeling drained and stressed. In fact, we seem to be more stressed out due to constantly changing times, instant technology, trying to keep up with everything and access to news and events from around the world. Learning how to make a few quick changes to your daily nutritional regime along with the addition of some simple stress relievers can benefit our drained brains immensely by decreasing the stress hormones and increasing the “feel good” hormones. This lunch & learn will give you a toolkit to use to help you make lasting changes in how you deal with stress and the drained brain.

Learning and Development Workshop Clifton Strengths

The Gallup Organization has studied human behaviour for more than 70 years with a goal to help organizations and individuals maximize their performance. This resulted in the design of an instrument and accompanying talent development program that is referred to as Strengths Quest. The testing instrument – Clifton Strengths Finder – consists of 180 paired comparison items that are classified into 34 groupings or themes.

Prior to this session, you will have the opportunity to complete the online Strengths Finder profile survey to discover your top five themes of talent. In this interactive session, you will explore your results and learn how to recognize and appreciate the unique talents and strengths of others and consider how these can be used in your work.

Come and explore best practices for choosing content and building a portfolio that truly reflects who you are as an educator. In Part One you will discuss what to include and discover a process for choosing the best artefacts for inclusion.
