Humber Noon Hour Concerts: The New Abeng Quartet

Humber Music kicks off the 2023-2024 Noon-Hour Concert Series with this extraordinary jazz ensemble. The New Abeng Quartet is comprised of multi-award-winning musicians who number among Canada’s finest jazz artists: Band leader Rich Brown, amongst Canada's most renowned bass players is joined by drum legend, Larnell Lewis, internationally acclaimed pianist Jeremy Ledbetter, and celebrated saxophonist Luis Deniz in concert. This supergroup has toured across Canada to rave reviews.

Drawing upon jazz-funk, fusion and rock influences, the ensemble’s music engages progressive concepts in both harmony and melody, where complex rhythms produce an exciting, fresh, and contemporary sound.

The ensemble earned a 2020 JUNO Award for their album, Abundance and recently released their follow-up recording, Abeng. Grounded in a spirit of resistance against oppression, the new album, and namesake of the group, is described by Ted Quinlan in The WholeNote as, “an impassioned reaction to, and path forward from, some of the darkest forces of human nature, specifically racism and divisiveness. [Brown] has chosen the abeng, an instrument originally fashioned by escaped Jamaican slaves, as a metaphor for a call to unity.”

Larnell Lewis and Rich Brown are current members of Humber faculty; Luis Deniz has also been a regular teacher at Humber.

Join education staff from the Humber Arboretum to discover what lives in a pond. All ages are welcome (Yes, that means adults!).

The Humber Arboretum has three ponds teeming with life. Our education team will lead you in safely and gently dipping a net into one of the ponds to see what organisms you can find in the water. Everything from aquatic insects to tadpoles and crayfish, you never know what you will find. We will help you identify and learn a little about the creatures you uncover. And don’t worry, none of the pond creatures will be out of the water for long; we will get everyone we pull out of the pond back in quickly, so as not to harm any of the organisms.

All are welcome, including staff and students from Humber College and the local community.

This event will be rain or shine. Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty and sturdy footwear that may also get a bit wet. All equipment will be provided.

Join ORI for Under Pressure: Disruptive Demographic Change, Its Impact on Labour Markets and the Clear Path Forward.

On behalf of Dr. Ginger Grant, dean, Research and Innovation and the Aging in Community Education and Research hub (ACER), we are excited to invite you to hear Bradley Schurman speak at North Campus on Wednesday, October 4 from 5 p.m. to  7:00 p.m. (light refreshments provided, Q&A).

Bradley Schurman, author of the book The Super Age, is an expert on demographic change and how it disrupts worldwide social, cultural, political and economic norms.

Three key messages you can expect from Bradley’s talk include:

  • Demographic change directly impacts the Canadian workforce and economy and we must act on labour challenges today
  • Older workers present the best opportunity to grow the Canadian economy during this period of disruptive demographic change
  • Leading companies worldwide proactively engage older workers through inclusive recruitment and retention practices and strategies that leverage the power of the generations

You will receive registration details for this event during the first week in September.

Please mark your calendars now.
