There are about 50 publicly accessed AEDs (automated external defibrillators) installed throughout Humber campuses and buildings. Additional AEDs will be installed in new or renovated Lakeshore buildings: Fitness Centre, Student Welcome and Resource Centre, G Building which houses the College’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Arts Commons. As a continuation of the AED initiative, and to complement the presence of Public Safety security guards who are trained in first aid, we continue to look at growing a roster of Humber employees who are trained in CPR and the use of AEDs throughout all Humber buildings. HRS|Health and Safety Services have been scheduling a series of CPR/AED courses focusing on members from Humber’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC). Our courses are open to Humber College and Guelph-Humber full time employees, particularly those who work in close proximity to an AED.

Schedule

The following courses have been scheduled:

  1. CPR-C/AED
    North Campus (Room F422), Thursday, October 6th, 2016, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  2. STANDARD FIRST AID (includes CPR/AED)
    North Campus (Room H304), Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th, 2016, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Course descriptions

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED Training (half-day): This 5 hour CPR/AED course will be provided by a Red Cross First Aid/CPR instructor and is intended to provide the skills and confidence needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking, either in the workplace or at home. The course will also familiarize you with the AEDs that have been installed on campus and how to use them. Successful completion leads to a CPR certification from the Canadian Red Cross.

First Aid & CPR/AED Course (two days): This comprehensive course offers first aid and CPR skills for those who need training for work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. The course covers a variety of topics from basic (circulation and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission) to in-depth topics (sudden medical emergencies and injuries to the head and/or spine). Successful completion leads to a Standard First Aid and CPR certification from the Canadian Red Cross. The First Aid & CPR/AED course is highly recommended for members of the ERT and the JOHSC, as well as Humber employees who work in locations away from the main campuses.

Registration

To Register: Please email Humaira Pirooz at humaira.pirooz@humber.ca and state the session that you would like to attend. Ensure your manager has approved your attendance before you sign up.

With the acceleration of digital and information technologies, older models of education as a pathway to knowledge mastery and skill proficiency are proving ineffective. Moreover, the Internet of Things and the advent of machine learning are blurring the cognitive capacities of humans and machines. Increasingly, thought leaders are pointing to a different model of human learning, one that emphasizes the ability to adapt, think and apply learning to quickly changing challenges. In this workshop, we will distill the research on learning agility, creativity and a related idea of cognitive flexibility, and connect with leadership principles, to build and apply a new model of leadership that combines learning and leading agility in the face of changing relationships between humans, machines and knowledge.

Nurses of Ubuntu
The Power of Human-ness

October 5th to November 3rd, 2016
Open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ubuntu, a word in the language of South Africa, is recognized as a world view of intense humanness and shared concern for each other and togetherness. “I am because you are” captures the recognition that we are interconnected, conscious of one another and sustained in each other.

Nursing students in the School of Health Science, explored concepts of cultural awareness and civic engagement, not in a classroom, but by working with local communities in Tanzania and Jamaica during their international clinical placements.

The exhibited body of work captures the substance of Ubuntu as the nursing students experience togetherness, honour compassion, promote tolerance and propagate harmony.

This interactive digital collection will reaffirm the power and the nature of an individual responsibility towards social change. This exhibition is an opportunity to connect with our own views and others…and ignite a dialogue about modern human-ness.

This interactive digital collection hopes to ignite the discourse about the need for our thoughts and actions to reflect that of connection, community and understanding.
