Are you responsible for managing support staff in your role? Did you know that as a manager, it is your responsibility to review position description forms (PDF’s) each year during the performance review process? And that best practice is to review the PDF every time you have a vacancy?

The goal of this workshop is to help managers learn more about Humber’s provincially negotiated job classification plan for support staff positions. This participatory session will offer attendees an overview of effectively writing support staff position description forms, important elements of the support staff collective agreement relating to position classification, and the support staff position review process at Humber.

Erin Holl, Director, Support Staff for the College Employer Council will co-facilitate this session and will discuss job evaluation best practices, offer insight into current classification issues within the College system, as well as discuss important arbitration decisions. Participants will leave with a reference guide on how to complete support staff position description forms in accordance with our negotiated job evaluation plan.

Workshop Highlights:

  • A review of completing a Position Description Form (PDF) and important aspects of the Support Staff Collective Agreement.
  • An update on important arbitration decisions in classification grievances.
  • Overview of the PDF review and classification process at Humber.

3D Printing - It may be finicky, need tweaking and tinkering but there are infinite possibilities. Learn how to print independently and consider ways to integrate 3D printing into your curriculum.

3D printing will be introduced and each participant will relate their interest of 3D printing in education. Topics to be covered include modelling and design, available printers, and printing technique. Tangible outcome: a printable file containing a personalized badge. This badge can be printed during a weekly mentored print session following which successful staff and faculty can print independently.

Note: By registering for this particular workshop, you are putting your name on a wait list, and will be notified on Thursday, March 27, 2014, if a spot opens up. Thank you for your understanding.

At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014, hundreds of millions of people across the globe will switch off the lights of homes and businesses for one hour. Earth Hour is the largest environmental action in history, bringing our voices together to collectively ‘Use Our Power’ and to make the commitment to take action and take better care of the planet  in the year ahead. Here is what you can do at Humber and at home to reduce your power use:

  • Elect an “Earth Hour Superhero” in your department/area, whose job it is to ensure lights are out and appliances, computers and monitors are off at the end of each working day (especially this Friday!)
  • Do not print unless absolutely necessary, and minimize printing and photocopying
  • Turn off printers, computers, monitors, microwaves and coffee machines at the power points at the end of the day when unused for long periods (this would reduce energy use by 5 per cent). (Especially before you go home this weekend!)
  • Share the message with your colleagues, students, friends, family!
  • Have dinner in candlelight this Saturday, March 29! …and as many nights as you can!
  • Send us a photo showing us what you did during Earth Hour this year via twitter @SustainHumber and you could win a delicious prize!
  • Find out more and learn what else you can do for Earth Hour at: www.earthhour.org
All year, we conserve energy on our Humber Campuses in several ways:
  • We have much of our lighting on sensors. Have the lights gone out on you in a meeting and you have to get up and dance to make them turn back on? That’s us conserving energy!
  •  We ‘set back’ our heating, cooling and ventilation equipment at 10 p.m. Monday – Friday and at 6 p.m. on the weekends until 6 a.m. Since there are fewer people around during those times, we don’t need to heat or cool the buildings as much, thus conserving energy.

Building assessments into Blackboard can become rather time consuming, but there is a workaround! Beginning this fall, Humber is proud to provide their faculty with a campus-wide license of Repondus. Fully compatible with Blackboard, Respondus is a premiere exam authoring tool that allows faculty to preview questions before publishing them to the LMS, publish assessments directly to Blackboard, create single exams or exam pools, as well as print exams and save files to MS Word.

Adding video and audio content to Blackboard has never been easier.  Create a repository of YouTube videos or create your own podcasts or short video clips and directly load or embed this content into the Learn environment.  It might seem like a daunting task, creating, editing and uploading your own videos, but the job does not have to be a difficult one and in most cases can be done rather quickly.  Participants will get tips on how to efficiently edit their footage and how to upload their finished product.  Faculty will also be coached on how videos can be used in their Blackboard site and how these videos can be used as podcasts for their students, clients and colleagues.

Students, when receiving advice about program and career choices, hear again and again that they need to “find their passion”, but they don’t really understand what that means. They can all tell you that their passion is something they love to do, but that alone doesn’t help them choose a path. How can we help them gain greater clarity? This presentation examines what passion for the work really means and how we and our students can connect our passions with our education and work. Along the way we’ll look at the connection between problem solving and passion, how to use your passion to create a context for your learning, and why what frustrates you is as important as what you love.
