President Whitaker has committed to host regular Town Hall Meetings to engage with faculty and staff on the implementation of the 2013-18 Strategic Plan. Join colleagues from across the college to learn together and share perspectives through open dialogue in the spirit of continuous improvement.

Town Hall Meeting #1: Differentiation and Strengthening Humber’s Polytechnic Identity

Differentiation is a hot topic in postsecondary education. Humber’s 2013-18 Strategic Plan identifies“Strengthening Our Polytechnic Identity” as one of our key priorities over the next five years. The conversation about differentiation is not just internal, however. The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has asked Humber – and all other postsecondary institutions – to consider our unique value proposition through the process of negotiating our Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA) with the Ministry. It is important that we are able to articulate how we distinguish ourselves as a provider of postsecondary education and training in Ontario.

We believe that Humber offers students an alternative option to the traditional college and university models in Ontario. Our combination of theoretical, applied, experiential and breadth learning sets us apart and is the very basis of our brand of polytechnic education. Every institution in the province is having the conversation about what makes it different… how will we get our message out?

Join us on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 for a light lunch and interesting conversation about Humber’s polytechnic identity and how it makes us different. All Town Hall Meetings will be live-streamed by the Media Services team to the strategic plan webpage for staff at www.humber.ca/wearehumber. The dialogue promises to be lively… mark the dates in your calendar!

Setting goals can help you achieve your desires in life. However, relatively few people actually prepare their objectives, perhaps because they feel that they do not have the time, the skills, or the resources to do so, or are hesitant to commit to their achievement. This session will address the common challenges that participants may face as they begin to focus on their positive future. It will also discuss proven strategies to design goals, evaluate their completeness, and implement a plan to achieve them.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Understand the benefits of goal setting.
  • Design their personal goals using proven goal setting formulas.
  • Implement effective strategies to measure goal achievement.

“Smart but odd…”, “An alien in a foreign social world…”,

“Marching to the beat of their own drum…”,

“A little dash of autism…”, “A tortured genius…”, “1 in 115!…”

These are just some of the phrases that come to mind when we think about “Asperger’s syndrome”.

In this workshop, we will work toward a better understanding of Asperger’s syndrome and also explore some tools you could use to support students with Asperger’s syndrome more effectively in your classroom.
