The Teaching Effectiveness Certificate program is designed for those interested in the field of teaching or private sector training. The courses within this certificate program provide participants with an opportunity to explore best practices in teaching and learning and apply the skills learned in a safe environment with other classmates.

The certificate is comprised of five individual courses that are designed to develop essential teaching competencies.  Upon successful completion of the five courses, participants receive a Certificate of Completion.

Using Blackboard for your face-to-face classes allows instructors to
share information with their students and encourages students to
keep track of critical course documents.

In this back-to-basics workshop for new and even frequent users of Blackboard, participants will learn about some of the more useful tools available to them in Blackboard such as Gradebook, Announcements, Assessments, Assignments and Discussion Boards. Workshop participants will also learn how to upload documents, modify current documents and effectively communicate with students within the Blackboard environment.

 Do you want tips on teaching students how to document their sources and avoid plagiarism…without putting them to sleep?

Humber’s Academic Regulations state that it is the student’s responsibility to learn and use the conventions of documentation. This comes as a shock to many students, who are completely in the dark when it comes to citing their sources and who don’t know the difference between plagiarizing and paraphrasing. This workshop will cover the essentials of teaching students how to document their sources correctly, thereby avoiding “accidental plagiarism”.

Lisa Salem-Wiseman is a professor in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Program Coordinator of the General Arts and Science College and University Transfer Program at the North Campus. She holds a Ph.D. in English from York University and a M.A. from Carleton University. In addition to numerous scholarly articles and book reviews, she has published two writing textbooks: Writing For Canadian Health Professionals, with co-author Sobia Zaman, and English Essentials, 1st Canadian edition, with co-author John Langan.

What is HELP?

  • HELP is the Humber Engagement and Learning Profile survey for incoming students.
  • Developed by a cross-institutional Advisory Group, HELP is a cutting-edge incoming student survey.

Who is HELP for?

  • HELP asks incoming first-semester students in certificate, diploma and degree programs to tell us about their preparation for college, their educational and career goals, early opinions about their program and Humber generally, and to identify particular student support services they may use.
  • Participating students are entered into a draw for more than $1,000 in prizes, including money towards tuition and an Apple iPod sponsored by the Humber Students Federation (HSF).

When does it happen?

  • The HELP survey is open to students during the third and fourth weeks of class (January 23 – February 5).
  • The survey is administered online and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Why is HELP important?

  • Students tell us how we can help them be successful at Humber, and receive individualized emails and timely information about Humber’s services based on areas of assistance they identified as beneficial!
  • Humber Institutional Research creates reports based on student responses to key questions and distributes these to student service areas as well as academic faculty/staff; identifies those who are struggling or at-risk of leaving early.
  • Aggregate data at the program, school and college levels will help us to develop institutional retention strategies that will help more students be successful in their program.

Tired of marking that assignment you have given for two semesters in a row?
Discouraged by the lack of time and energy your students are putting into their work?

Sometimes all you need is a new approach and some colleagues
to help inspire you.

In this workshop we rethink our approach to evaluation in hands on fashion. Starting from the premise that testing does not necessarily mean tests and that assignments should extend knowledge not just involve its repetition, we consider how to design and develop engaging evaluation procedures. Bring an assignment you would like to revamp to this session, as we workshop new ways of approaching evaluation.

Culture shock is experienced by students in our classrooms. After a period of initial euphoria, students transition through stages as they navigate towards cultural adaptation. In this workshop, you will learn how to identify the stages of cultural adaptation and the challenging behaviours and feelings that may accompany a student through the stages of adjustment. The session will enable participants to understand their student’s cultural conflicts, better manage behaviours and provide responsive resolutions in the classroom.
