The Centre for Human Rights, Equity, and Inclusion would like to wish you a Happy Lunar New Year! The Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, falls on January 22 and is an important celebration among East and Southeast Asian cultures. Tied to the lunar calendar, the holiday began as a time for feasting, honoring household, and heavenly deities, as well as ancestors. The New Year typically begins with the first new moon that occurs between the end of January and spans the first 15 days of the first month of the lunar calendar—until the full moon arrives.

2023 is the year of the Rabbit. The Rabbit is the fourth animal sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle. The 12 zodiac animals are, in order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each year has an animal sign according to the 12-year-cycle.
