Driving and Pedestrian Safety

The end of August and beginning of September is always an exciting time at Humber. Many of us look forward to the return of campus life and the energy that our new and returning staff and students bring with them. While this makes Humber a great place to work and learn, the increased traffic and congestion around campus cannot be ignored. There will be a significant increase in the number of cars and pedestrians in and around campus roads and parking lots. Whether you drive, bike, walk, or take transit to campus, you will be impacted by this increased activity, and it is important to stay safe and vigilant when moving about campus grounds.

If you drive on campus, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Follow all posted traffic signs. This includes speed limit signs and stop signs.
  • Watch for pedestrians: consistently scan the road and all sides of the road for pedestrians, cyclists, other motorists, and other hazards. Give pedestrians adequate time to cross the road.
  • Look in all directions before making a turn and signal your turn.
  • Avoid distractions: never use your cell phone while driving.
  • Pay extra attention when reversing your vehicle.

As a pedestrian walking along roads and in parking lots, always practice the following:

  • Always walk on sidewalks and designated walking paths.
  • Use designated crosswalks to cross the road and look both ways before crossing. Make eye contact with any drivers in the area before stepping onto the road.
  • Be mindful of curbs and other tripping hazards.
  • Avoid distractions: never use your cell phone when walking.
