Individualized Workplace Emergency Response Information

Humber College is committed to providing an accessible living, learning and working environment. In order to comply with the Integrated Accessibility Standards (AODA, 2005), HR Services is working towards achieving a barrier free environment at Humber. The Integrated Accessibility Standards (IAS) is Legislation that outlines accessibility requirements in three areas: Information and Communication, Transportation and Employment. Requirements in each of these areas covered in the IAS will come into effect every year until 2021 and will support Humber in increasing accessibility to all its constituents.

Within the Employment Standard of the IAS, Humber is required to provide individualized workplace emergency response information for employees with disabilities. The purpose of this information is to outline how an employee with a disability, if they require it, will be provided with assistance in the event of an emergency. An emergency can range from an acute event that requires medical attention to an event such as a fire where special evacuation procedures may be necessary.

What is Humber Doing?

Humber has developed a Workplace Emergency Response Plan Template that will assist employees with disabilities and their Managers in determining what accommodation needs the employee may require in the event of an emergency.

Next Steps

In the coming weeks, Nancy Simms, Director, Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity, will be sending information directly to all deans and directors about the workplace emergency response information as well as instructions regarding the process of developing the individualized emergency workplace response plan.

Let’s continue to ensure Humber’s compliance with the AODA
