Copyright Tip: Use Internet Material in the Classroom

In 2012, in order to support the academic community, an exception for using Internet material was added to the Copyright Act.

This exception allows faculty to reproduce, save, download and distribute material from the Internet as long as the following criteria are met:

  1. the content has been made available by the copyright holder.
  2. the content is publicly available and not password-protected (Ex: members-only section).
  3. there is no clearly visible notice prohibiting educational use (Ex: the copyright symbol is not a visible notice).
  4. the source and author/creator is cited.
