Micro-credentials That Mean Something

Micro-credentials certify an individual’s ongoing achievements in an ever-changing world. They allow skills and competencies to be learned in a flexible, fast and affordable way. Micro-credentials are designed to help organizations recognize and integrate critical skill-sets into their workforce while supporting the pursuit of individual career goals in a stackable, portable and customizable way.

Focused on Competencies: Focused, flexible and rapid learning targeted to the specific needs of your current or next job.

Assessment-based: Assessment provides real-world evidence to demonstrate you have the skills employers want or need.

Endorsed by Business or Industry: A Humber network of employers and partners identify in-demand skills and validate the learning approach.

*Humber micro-credentials are aligned with eCampusOntario Micro-credential Principles and Framework.

3 Ways You Can Earn a Micro-credential at Humber

THROUGH A SHORT OFFERING

You can also earn a micro-credential through a single-focused short offering. These short offerings have been built to provide the learner with knowledge and skills that focus on specific industry work-based needs. Upon successfully completing the final assessment, learners will have a new skill to add to their resume or toward advancement in their career. Short offering micro-credentials are a great way to build in-demand skills quickly and efficiently.

As Part of a CPL Certificate

You can obtain certain micro-credentials while you are on your way to earning a CPL certificate. Specific courses within a CPL certificate can earn learners a micro-credential showing the specialized skills and knowledge they have already achieved. This is a great way to show employers or potential employers what new skills you can bring to your career. Typically you will require 3 - 4 stackable courses within a program area to earn a CPL certificate.

BY PRIOR LIFE OR WORK EXPERIENCE

You can also achieve a micro-credential through an assessment of knowledge and skills from outside of the traditional classroom. Life or work experience can prove to be of equivalent value to specific course knowledge and skills. Participants can register for and successfully complete a competency-based assessment of previous learning to earn their micro-credential.

Find Out if You Qualify for OSAP

Learners enrolled in an Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) approved micro-credential program can apply for financial assistance through OSAP for Micro-credentials. The amount of funding a student could receive is based on several factors, including financial need, household income and the micro-credential. Eligible students can apply for funding for one micro-credential course per study period.

How to Apply for OSAP Funding

  1. Confirm the Humber micro-credential course you want to take is OSAP-approved at microlearnontario.ca.
  2. Log in to your OSAP account. If this is your first time applying for OSAP, you will need to create an account.
  3. Complete and submit the OSAP micro-credential application for your selected course:
    • You can only be funded for one course at a time. If you plan to take multiple micro-credentials, you can apply for OSAP after the previous course is complete or ensure the study periods do not overlap.
    • Your completed application must be submitted by the last day of your course.
    • All required documentation must be received no later than five (5) days after the end of the current study period.
  4. Register and pay for the micro-credential course at humber.ca/continuous-professional-learning/learner-programs/micro-credentials.html. You are responsible for paying the full course fee to register.
  5. Once the course begins, Humber will confirm your enrolment to OSAP, and approved funding will be deposited into your bank account by the National Student Loan Service Centre.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for funding through the OSAP for Micro-credentials program, you must be:

  • Registered in an OSAP-approved micro-credential.
  • A resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.
  • A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person.
  • In good standing for previous OSAP loans (i.e. you have not defaulted on a student loan and/or you are not restricted from participating in financial aid programs).
