Humber Polytechnic recognizes the unique challenges faced by military-connected learners—those currently serving in uniform, transitioning Veterans, immediate family members, and Department of National Defence public servants. As an underrepresented group in postsecondary education, they often encounter obstacles that can make earning a certification more complex. That’s why we’ve developed a tailored approach to support their success. By acknowledging the distinct needs of serving members, Veterans, and families, we ensure our services align with the specific support required—making education more accessible, flexible, and achievable.
As part of the government’s commitment to recognizing the valuable experiences of the military-connected community—including those in uniform, transitioning service members, and their families—the recognition of prior learning process is being enhanced to better support their pursuit of postsecondary education and civilian careers. At Humber Polytechnic, we are proud to champion this initiative, helping learners save both time and tuition while gaining recognized civilian qualifications. Through an improved Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process, military-connected learners can have their military training, work experience, and education recognized—streamlining their path to earning course credits that align with careers in trades, technology, and other fields. This approach honours their achievements and empowers them with the resources and support needed to thrive in Ontario’s workforce.
