Alternative Dispute Resolution Alumna is Called to the Bar

Farzana’s journey started in early 2016 when she moved to Canada. Before moving, she practiced corporate commercial law in India at a multinational company focused on regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and securities law. Given that litigation was prone to the slow wheels of justice, Farzana decided to pursue a faster and more proactive area of law. This led to her interest in alternative dispute resolution, and in 2017, graduated from Humber’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) graduate certificate program with honours.

While at Humber, Farzana completed her ADR co-op with the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT) within the Ministry of the Attorney General where she began handling multifarious Highway Traffic Act matters - far from a linear direction of what she defined as success. One month of co-op with LAT turned into 27 months of employment - first as a scheduler, then as a Case Management Officer (general stream), and finally as a Case Management Officer (special unit handling catastrophic impairment files and self-represented litigants). This experience taught Farzana a very important lesson in being flexible and seizing opportunities at given junctures. This can lead to many fascinating paths and a re-defined sense of achievement.

Farzana passes this message along to ADR students every year when coming back to attend the ADR career night. She is very much involved with the program and has provided guidance and unwavering support to students since 2018 by sharing her experiences and success tips.

Currently, Farzana has cleared all the stages to finally qualify as a licensed lawyer in Ontario and was recently called to the Ontario Bar.
