Research & Innovation
In Transition: Bridging the Employability Gap for International Learners Through Integrated Solutions
Our Research Project, ‘In Transition: Bridging the Employability Gap for International Learners Through Integrated Solutions’, comprehensively explores the challenges that international students face as they transition into the Canadian workforce.
In 2023, Humber College’s International Graduate School (IGS) at the Humber Downtown campus, in partnership with the Jamaican Canadian Association and Newcomer Women's Services, was awarded $360,000 through the College and Community Social Innovation Fund by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to develop this initiative.
With a human-centred design-based approach including different stakeholders, this maps the journey of international students in Canada, from graduation to permanent residency, documenting challenges and developing an innovative framework for new supports and programming that validates the skills and competencies of international learners, and expedites pathways to full-time employment.

Meet the Team
Our Core Team at Humber College is led by Principal Investigators Dr Parveen Gill and Cheryl Francis-Nurse, MBA, PMP, CTDP, alongside Dr Diane Simpson and Rina Di Mito, supported by a diverse group of research assistants who are current students and alumni with expertise in research analytics, human resources and marketing. The project is strengthened through partnerships with the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) and Newcomer Women’s Services (NEW); organizations that share our commitment to making a meaningful impact of the lives of international graduates in Canada.
Industry Talks
Join us in shaping the future workforce!
Guest Speaker Series and Panel Discussions
Deliver a presentation or participate in a panel discussion about sector specific topics such as emerging technologies, workforce trends and opportunities, and required skills. Offer career advice, discuss your career path and share practical knowledge. Students will be enriched with the diverse perspectives and audience interaction.
Industry Firechats & Networking Events
Participate in small group discussions or informal networking opportunities you can meet and interact with students in a relaxed setting. Hiring managers can make connections, expand their talent pipelines and informally source candidates for upcoming early talent or internship roles.
Skill-Building Sessions
We invite industry professionals to volunteer and lead 1-hour interactive workshops that showcase how essential skills, mindsets, and values—such as leadership communication, systems thinking, design thinking, and other key competencies—can be applied in the real world. By sharing your expertise, you’ll help equip the next generation with the tools they need to thrive in the Canadian labour market.
