Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab

Pioneering Solutions for a Connected World

Humber Polytechnic in Toronto, Canada has established North America’s first Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab—a world-class industry research center designed to explore multisectoral business applications enabled by the new ATSC 3.0 IP-based television broadcast standard.

New data delivery models include broadcasting infotainment and map updates into connected cars, remote education, geo-targeted emergency alerting/information for the public, emergency communication networks for first responders, and delivering nano-second precision time for critical infrastructure and complementary PNT(GPS) service via ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Positioning System.

Canada’s ATSC 3.0 Broadcast System

The B²C Lab offers leading edge infrastructure including Canada’s only ATSC 3.0 broadcast system—a multiple transmitter OTA broadcast SFN test bed across four Tx/Rx sites, including Toronto’s CN Tower, with the capability to reach nearly 25% of Canada’s marketplace. The lab includes three 5G core networks to explore 5G convergence applications and a vast array of implementations. An RF anechoic test chamber supports design, development and testing of a wide range of antennas, wireless devices, and prototypes.
