4 colour heart outline with the word Health in the centre. The words Financial, Social, Mental and Physical surround it.

At Humber, we value the health and well-being of our staff and students and want to support YOU every step of the way.

To support this commitment, Humber has launched humber.ca/healthyYOU, an online healthy community hub that is a central site for well-being resources for students and employees.

The Hub also includes Humber’s Well-being Strategy, which focuses on four pillars: mental, physical, financial, and social health and well-being. We provide support to the overall health and well-being of our employees through a variety of resources and initiatives.

To support our employees’ mental health and well-being, the following resources are available:

  • CAAT Group Benefits Program
Through CAAT Group Benefits, eligible Humber employees have access to financial coverage to support their mental and physical health.

  • TELUS Health (formerly LifeWorks)
TELUS Health provides all employees with access to online resources on topics such as health and well-being, career and workplace, financial security, and life-events. Full-time employees also have access to the Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP).

  • Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness
With a strong focus on healthy living, research and innovation, and community connections, Humber’s Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness (CIHW) is a powerful advocate for change, helping to create solutions that support a healthier tomorrow for everyone, no matter where they live, what they have, or who they are. CIHW runs the following programs:

  • Healthy Breaks @ Humber
Healthy Breaks @ Humber is an initiative that allows faculty and staff to book a short 10-minute break during the workday, in the middle of a meeting or class to refresh the body and mind. Research has shown that taking healthy breaks during the day can help improve mental health, lower anxiety, and help refocus the mind. Taking a healthy break can increase productivity, lessen body aches and pains, improve creativity, and increase engagement. These student-led sessions can be offered as either a stretch break or a mindfulness break.

  • Mindfulness @ Humber
In today's fast-paced world, finding moments of peace and tranquility is essential for our overall well-being. Join us for a transformative mindfulness meditation session, where you can recharge, find inner calm, and cultivate a deeper connection with yourself.  Virtual and in-person sessions are offered throughout the year, sign up for a time that works for you.

  • Wellness Coaching @Humber
In the winter term each year, the Wellness Coaching Program offers free 1:1 coaching to employees on their personal health and wellness goals. Led by the students in Humber's Wellness Coaching Graduate Program and using a strengths-based and non-judgmental approach, Wellness Coaches support employees with identification and implementation of specific goals related to physical, social, mental, emotional or relational wellness.

Look out for the A black heart with a white background

Great news! We are happy to share that the fall scholarship applications will be available for Humber students from August 8 to September 18.

Please help students reach their full potential by spreading the word and encouraging them to apply for scholarships today.

Scholarship support is made possible thanks to Humber’s incredibly supportive community of donors, which includes alumni, volunteers, retirees, friends, and corporations, and our very own faculty and staff, who can sign up through Humber Gives. Here are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra. For more details, please follow the links below:

Flexible grading

Now with added grading capabilities, instructors have more options for grading assessments:

  • Grade by question or student, and filter by grading status
  • Navigate between students and multiple submission attempts
  • View both the attempt and final grade for each assessment
  • Provide feedback with or without a rubric, and grade inline using Blackboard Annotate
  • Collapse side panels to view more of the student submission
  • Post all grades when ready

Gradebook improvements

In grid view, cells without submissions will display a single dash “-“ whereas those with new submissions will display the New Submission label. This change was made to remove the pre-existing “Grade now” label which has caused some confusion when viewing the grading status of submissions.

Instructors can now also reorder gradable items in the gradebook list view to align with the course structure:

  • Select the corresponding Move Item button (up/down arrow) of the gradable item
  • Drag and release to its new location

The new order will also be reflected in the grid view and in the students’ view.

Bulk download of anonymous submissions

Instructors can now download submissions in bulk for anonymous assessments in the gradebook grid view. Click on the icon of the anonymous assessment item (top row of the grid) and select ‘download submissions’ to generate a ZIP file. Once ready, the instructor will be notified via the Messages section of Blackboard with a link to download the file.

Improvements in editing Rubrics

Previously when editing rubrics, selecting text outside an editable area would save edits made and automatically exit out of edit mode. Now, if users select text inside the rubric edit box and navigate out of the edit box, the edit mode remains open.

Replace files in course content

To help manage storage space, replacing a file within the course no longer creates a new file version. Now, the new file replaces the pre-existing file completely to free storage space.

Students with alert flags in the Course Activity Report

Instructors can now identify students at risk using alert flags based on:

  • Number of days a student is inactive in a course
  • A student’s overall grade in the course is below a specific percentage

Instructors can filter alerts for all students, students with alerts, and students without alerts. Students with alerts are also highlighted in the course activity chart (Analytics section) and in the CSV download.

The full list of August updates is available on the Blackboard Help Center website.

Welcome to the monthly series of “Did you know? Helpful HR-related information and best practices.” Every month, there is a Communiqué announcement posted that covers tips, best practices, and general HR-related topics.

This month’s topics include important information about employee vacation planning

For future topic ideas, we would like to hear from YOU!

Employee Vacation Planning Reminders

Did you know that employees are encouraged to use their annual vacation entitlement?

In keeping with our ongoing commitment to making the Humber Community a healthier place to live, work and learn, it is important that employees have time away from work to focus on their personal and individual responsibilities as well as to rest and recharge.

Employees and managers are responsible for ensuring employees are using their annual vacation entitlement and do not exceed the vacation carry-over limit. If an employee has vacation carry-over, the employee and their manager are responsible for developing a plan for the employee to use their vacation days.

Adherence to the 15-day Vacation Carry-Over Limit for Administrative Staff

Administrative staff are expected to take all accrued (earned) vacation in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment.

  • Administrative staff may carry-over a maximum of fifteen (15) vacation days above their annual entitlement to the subsequent vacation year (September 1 to August 31).
  • Any unused vacation in excess of fifteen (15) days above their annual entitlement will be eliminated from the employee’s vacation bank on September 1 each year.

Please refer to the Administrative Staff Vacation Policy for more details.

Vacation Carry-over Requests for Unionized Workers

The vacation carry-over requirements and limits for unionized employees are covered within the respective Collective Agreement
