SWITCH is a bold infrastructure project that directly addresses the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions at the North Campus: the heating and cooling system.  

The project is part of Humber’s response to the climate crisis and is expected to reduce GHG emissions by 40 per cent at the North Campus and reduce our fossil fuel usage by 70 per cent.

Humber Galleries is looking for students, staff, faculty and alumni to be a part of our volunteer team for this year's Nuit Blanche at Humber College's Lakeshore Campus! 

About Nuit Blanche 2023

Nuit Blanche, Toronto’s all-night contemporary art event, will take place on September 23, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. in neighbourhoods across the city, including major exhibition areas in Etobicoke, downtown and Scarborough. This year, the City of Toronto seeks to uncover and highlight artists whose ground-breaking practices challenge the status quo through media, form or content that transforms public spaces and inspires the public to see and experience Toronto in new and meaningful ways.   

For the second year, Humber College Lakeshore Campus in Etobicoke will be a major exhibition hub and will showcase installations that speak to the curatorial theme of Breaking Ground. It speaks to ideas centered around the natural world as well as being on the vanguard of change and innovation. Defined as the preparation for building or planting, Breaking Ground invites artists to explore a multiplicity of themes, including but not limited to the implications of climate change, construction and development of the city’s urban landscape, the impacts on communities and our collective responsibilities around land and stewardship. 

Time Commitment

The volunteer commitment for Nuit Blanche Toronto is overnight (more than 12 hours) for the duration of the event. Shifts before and after the event range from between two to six hours. For overnight shifts, volunteers are required to attend a pre-event training session. 

Volunteer Roles

We have the following roles available during the event itself, as well as pre/post-event roles available: 

Information Ambassadors provide front-line, top-caliber customer service to festival visitors. They are the goodwill ambassadors who keep everyone informed. Responsibilities include helping patrons navigate the event by distributing information materials, answering questions and giving directions. 

Ushers provide front-line customer service to festival visitors while they wait to view projects and ensure their successful navigation through line-ups.  

Project Facilitators assist an artist with their project and/or aid in facilitation with audiences in how to engage with the installation. 

Volunteer Captain oversee a large group of volunteers assigned at sites where a staff person is not available. Responsibilities include managing schedules, facilitating tasks, and communicating between volunteers and staff. This position is ideal for someone who has some experience in volunteer coordination. 

Pre/Post-Event Volunteers work with Humber Galleries staff and artists to install and de-install artwork, signage, and prepare event spaces. This position is ideal for someone who has some hands-on experience with artwork, general event preparation and wants to work with event staff and artists.

The 2023-2026 Academic Plan officially began the first week of April, and I am looking forward to embarking on all of the exciting work that will follow this milestone. 

This foundational document sets the academic priorities of the College and focuses on seeking out innovation in the ways we teach and learn. The plan enables us to address the opportunities our changing post-secondary landscape presents, including offering students more flexible and personalized learning and the ongoing evolution of our credential mix.    

I’m especially excited about Priority 3 – Empowering Teaching and Learning at Humber. Inspired by an initiative Humber implemented in the early days of my career as a faculty member in the Police Foundations Program, this priority supports faculty and staff to undertake projects that enable innovation and create new teaching and learning approaches. At the end of the project, faculty and staff will make recommendations for further exploration and assess scalability across the institution. We will share the projects annually with the College community. 

The call for proposals is now open and I invite you to collaborate with colleagues to submit a proposal that supports the goals of the Academic Plan. This includes approaches to competency-based learning, modularizing curriculum, and harnessing new and emerging technology in teaching and learning. The possibilities are vast, and I encourage creativity, risk-taking and innovation. The closing date to submit proposals is April 30, 2023, with future opportunities to submit if you aren’t quite ready. 

This is your opportunity to envision what you want the future of teaching and learning to look like – and to dabble in the future right now! Let’s push the boundaries of how we design and deliver the best possible learning experience for every Humber student.

April 17, 2023 to June 16, 2023

As part of the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project, crews will be doing road widening works along Finch Avenue West between Hwy 27 and Humber College Boulevard.

The work is scheduled for April 17, 2023, and will last for six (6) weeks, approximately. To safely perform the work, the temporary traffic staging as shown above will remain in place.

Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

Please take extra care when navigating near work sites, and always make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of any equipment or vehicle.

Minor field modifications may occur when needed to complete work safely and minimize impact on the public.

We will continue to monitor noise and vibration levels during these activities to identify the need for mitigative actions.
