Your on-campus student-run restaurant lab, The Humber Room, is open for lunch!   

This week is our last week open for service during the winter semester. Join us for our à la carte and reception service styles with a different menu available each day.   

Enjoy our student-created mocktail "Baby Shark" available for a limited time only.

The Humber Room is a live learning lab for our students and a culinary and service experience for guests. Our menu selection and service style change every week based on our curriculum. Enjoy your culinary experience led by our Culinary Management and Baking and Pastry Arts students and service provided by Event and Hospitality Management students.

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) Issue 4

Humber Press, Office of Research & Innovation, is pleased to announce the release of the latest issue of the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE). This annual issue is a consolidation of submissions that have been accepted for publication in 2022. 

The past few years of the pandemic have made an indelible impact on the economic, social and cultural fabrics of our society. Creating and sharing new knowledge have taken on a renewed urgency as communities around the world seek to rebuild a world that meets the ever-changing needs of the times. 

The new issue of JIPE highlights research studies from authors from across Canada and internationally. The articles provide valuable insights on responding to challenges with adaptability and resilience while shedding light on the importance of research and innovation.

About JIPE

The Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is an online, open-access journal for peer-reviewed papers that mobilize knowledge and insights generated by the global polytechnic community. JIPE is electronically published by Humber Press at Humber College’s Office of Research & Innovation. 

JIPE publishes original research papers, review articles, brief reports, book reviews and our “micro-dissemination” options: innovation spotlights and essays. View three suggestions to enhance the academic accessibility of assessments for all students:

  • Post critical path by the first day of class and make every effort to adhere to it in order to allow students to plan accordingly. 

  • Provide assessment reviews to clarify expectations and specify format of tests/exams in advance. 

  • Scaffold major assignments to allow for ongoing feedback.

The end of semester is fast approaching. Is your Gradebook set up? 

The Innovative Learning Support Centre has compiled these frequently asked questions about Gradebook: 

1. “How do I set up Overall Grades?” 

Use the weighted grading calculation so students see the running total of their overall grade. Assign the weighted % values to each gradable item according to the assessment plan or structure of your published course outline. 

2. “How do I post Final Grades?” 

Calculate and share final grades with your students using the Overall Grade column. Verify that all gradable items/categories have been assigned the correct weighted per cent values, and only those counting towards the final grade are included. 

3. “My students’ overall grades don’t look right. What can I do?”  

Confirm that the checkbox “Base calculation on points earned out of total graded points” in the Overall Grade Settings is checked off so students see their actual grade earned to date out of all the assessments you have graded. If left unchecked, the overall grade would include assessments not administered or graded and would show inaccurate grades. 

4. “Why can’t my students see their grades?” 

Check that the assessment items and their content folders have been made ‘visible to students’ on the course content page. Confirm the release conditions settings are accurate to show course content to students during your specified timeframe. 

5. “Gradebook is assigning automatic zeros. What should I do?” 

Gradebook assigns automatic zeros for past due assessments by default, even for past courses that have been copied. Disable automatic zeros from the Gradebook settings to ensure that grades are not negatively impacted, and students are credited for all their work.
