Are you about to retire at the end of December? Consider joining the Humber College Retirees’ Association (HCRA).

This is a way to keep in touch with colleagues and even to meet those fellow employees your work didn’t give you a chance to know better. The majority of our activities are social, but we also support students through the Retirees' Bursary and Scholarship Programs.

Your retirement information from HR will include the HCRA brochure that has membership information.

Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • Accessible Learning Services recognizes that there may be multiple professors assigned to teach the same course section

  • For Humber specifically, if the new faculty member taking over is assigned as an instructor of the course on MyHumber/Banner, then they may already notice student Accommodation Letters on the ALS Faculty Web Portal

  • If faculty are teaching the first half of a course only, we recommend that the incoming faculty be alerted to any students in the course who have an Accommodation Letter.

  • Remember, although most student Accommodation Letters are available on the Faculty Web Portal, some students prefer to share their letters directly with faculty independently and these will not be reflected on the portal.

  • We encourage faculty taking over the course to reach out to students with Accommodation Letters and confirm the letter has been reviewed.

  • Questions about accessing the faculty web portal, can be addressed to accessible-learning@humber.ca.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Since 2018, organizational changes have been made as part of our ongoing effort to ensure that Humber’s Academic Division is well positioned to achieve its strategic and academic goals. The initial changes included the transition from eight schools to six Faculties and the launch of the Centres of Innovation network. In 2020, we enhanced the Centre for Innovative Learning (CIL) with a focus on strengthening our capacity building in the areas of teaching and learning to support our faculty and staff to better respond to the College’s and our learners’ ever-changing needs.

The CIL has grown to include flexible learning and pathways, equitable and inclusive teaching and learning, digital learning, and quality assurance through the Program Planning Development and Renewal department, that is now under the CIL portfolio. Through these recent changes, we have learned that the work done within the CIL is critical to achieving our goals and advancing our strategic priorities.

Our next step in furthering our success and vision is to introduce an Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning role to the Academic Division. This position will be responsible for the CIL and for providing vision and leadership across a wide range of initiatives that support academic excellence.

I am pleased to announce that Vera Beletzan, currently the Senior Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Innovative Learning, has been appointed to the position and will assume the role early in the new year. In her current role, Vera has led both the CIL and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences since 2018. She has been instrumental in the creation of the CIL and its various units. She brings more than 20 years of academic experience and the ability to support the vision of the academic division as we continue on our path of continuous improvement.

A Senior Dean will be hired to lead the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The search will commence in the coming days.

As we continue to build the capacity of the Centre for Innovative Learning, we have two Associate Deans who will take on secondments to meet specific needs. As noted in the Communique last week, Lisa Salem-Wiseman, Associate Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness has been seconded to take on the role of Special Advisor: Humber Learning Outcomes. In the coming weeks, Heather Lowry, Associate Dean, Faculty of Media & Creative Arts, will be seconded to the CIL to take on the role of Associate Dean, Digital Learning. The Associate Dean, Digital Learning provides leadership to a team that supports Humber’s digital learning activities, projects and initiatives. This includes developing, delivering and assessing Humber’s learning innovation ecosystem, focusing on an integrated approach to the effective use of digital tools and innovative educational technology. Heather brings her vast knowledge related to educational technology and her deep understanding of pedagogy to this important role. She will work with both the academic division and with Information Technology Services in this role.

Please join me in congratulating Vera, Lisa and Heather as they take on these new roles.

I am pleased to announce the launch of Humber’s Quality Culture (QC) webpage.

This site describes and reflects our institution-wide commitment to quality, informed by our shared vision, values and goals. The site also reinforces our commitment to our students, all of whom are central to the quality assurance process. Our culture of quality ensures that we continue to focus on excellence in all that we do, to provide the best possible learning experience and outcomes for our students, inside and outside the classroom.

The QC webpage provides an overview of the elements of our continuous improvement framework and the teams that support it through the Centre for Innovative Learning. The site also identifies the elements of our QC processes related to new program development, annual quality assessments and cyclical program review.

We know that building a quality culture requires the collective effort of our entire community. Our QC site provides a space for the Humber community to share ideas and resources and to celebrate our successes along the way.

Recording of the  CAAT Pension Purchases session is now available online!

CAAT Pension Plans can provide you with an even bigger pension upon retirement with the purchase of additional pension. You can now watch the recording of the Pension Purchases Training Session that was held on October 19.

In this session, a CAAT Pension plan expert discussed the opportunities that employees have to make their benefit in the CAAT Plan even more valuable if they have eligible periods to purchase additional pension. These periods include periods of employment before enrolling, breaks in employment, or if the employee has earned a benefit from a previous employer’s pension plan.

The following topics were covered in the session:

  • What a pension purchase is
  • The amount of pension you can expect to get from a purchase
  • How to determine whether a pension purchase is right for you
  • How to make a pension purchase

Humber College Community Partnership Fund

Is there a community project that your faculty or department is interested in developing with a local community organization? Humber College faculties/departments are invited to develop and submit proposals that can benefit local children, youth, Aboriginal Peoples and newcomers. If you have identified a need in the community, that your faculty or department has expertise in addressing, you can submit a proposal for funding through this initiative. Assistance is provided to develop your project concept and connect you with a relevant community agency (if you do not have one) to support you in the writing of your proposal.

The focus of your project concept should be to contribute, in some manner, to increased knowledge/training, exposure and/or access to post-secondary educational possibilities for the target groups listed above. These might include pathways into education, training and/or employment and/or building the organizational capacity of community agencies who share this same focus.

Humber student participation in projects is encouraged as this is an opportunity for them to build their co-curricular record. Their involvement would be an opportunity to deepen and apply theoretical knowledge. However it cannot be tied to grades for their academic program. Students could, for example, be involved as a mentor, volunteer or in a paid position

Email lynn.vanlieshout@humber.ca to receive funding applications & guidelines, and to discuss possible funding ideas, links to community partners and to refine concepts

Submissions due on Friday, December 17 by 5 p.m.
