Reminder Notice: Vacation Planning, Employee Appreciation Day on July 2 and Summer Hours - 2021

The need to take time for ourselves and our family is an important part of a healthy work-life balance. This year, it has become especially important. No one could have imagined the challenges we have faced over the past year and although vacations might look a little different this year, it is still important to unplug and take time away from our workspaces to maintain a healthy work-life balance. We encourage all staff to schedule and plan their yearly vacation entitlement in consultation with their manager.

In order to ensure that vacation requests are considered fairly and effectively, please refer to the ‘Vacation Accrual Summary Document’ in HRMS as listed below for your employee group. It will provide information on how vacation accruals work within the HRMS and how you can use the accrued vacation days to request and plan for vacation. Key points to consider:

SUMMER HOURS, EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY AND STATUTORY HOLIDAYS

Summer Hours

During the period from May to August, where operationally feasible, management has the authority and discretion to establish summer working hours for their employees. These hours may vary from regular operating hours.

Summer hours usually mean that employees continue to work their full number of hours each week but may start and finish earlier or later in the day. When considering requests for summer hours, managers are encouraged to engage in conversation with their employees to discuss feasible options while ensuring regular customer service is maintained.

Should there be any questions regarding the scheduling and/or taking of vacation, or the observance of holidays, please contact your HR Business Partner.

Summer Early Closings

Early closing days is a perk that allows staff to get away a bit early on the Friday of long weekends during the summer period. Although we encourage that this continues for 2021 wherever operationally feasible, we recognize that with most employees working remotely and the range of public health measures that may limit travel, this benefit may not have the same value as it has in the past. Therefore, in addition to the early closings, we have also deemed Friday, July 2 as an Employee Appreciation Day where the College will be closed for regular operations.

Managers are encouraged to support early Friday closing for statutory holidays that fall on a Monday, as listed below. Staff who are scheduled to work on the Friday before the holiday Monday, should be encouraged to finish work one and a half hours (1.5) early the Friday before the long weekend, from the end of their regular workday.

Subject to the operational requirements of the division/department, early closures for 2021 apply to the following:

  • Friday, May 21 (prior to Victoria Day)
  • Friday, July 30 (prior to the Civic Holiday)
  • Friday, September 3 (prior to Labour Day)

Staff who are required to work full hours on any of the early closing days shall be given one and a half hours (1.5) off on another day during the summer, to be scheduled by their manager.

The College will be closed for the summer employee appreciation day on:

  • Friday, July 2, 2021

Staff who would be regularly scheduled to work on Friday, July 2 will be paid their regular wages for the day. Any staff who are required to work on Friday, July 2, 2021 for any reason, will receive equivalent time off, on another day with regular pay.

Overtime pay on the early closing days and/or the employee-appreciation day, shall apply only in situations where employees are required to work beyond their regularly scheduled hours and have the approval of their manager. Any overtime must be submitted and approved using the HRMS.

Statutory Holidays

The College will be closed on the following Statutory Holidays during 2021:

  • Family Day

Monday, February 15

  • Good Friday

Friday, April 2

  • Victoria Day

Monday, May 24

  • Canada Day

Thursday, July 1

  • Civic Holiday

Monday, August 2

  • Labour Day

Monday, September 6

  • Thanksgiving

Monday, October 11

Note: The December/January Holiday Closure details to be sent in a separate memo and closer to the date.

Statutory Holiday Pay

Staff required to work on a statutory holiday shall be entitled to paid time and one-half for each hour worked, plus holiday pay or equivalent time off in lieu. Refer to the applicable collective agreement or admin staff policy for further details on eligibility and qualifying rules for statutory holiday pay.

Part-time staff may be eligible for holiday pay, plus time and one half pay, for hours worked on any statutory holiday. To qualify for statutory holiday pay, part-time employees must have worked on their scheduled day of work preceding and following the recognized holiday.

Payments made to all part-time staff shall be equal to the total amount of regular wages and vacation pay payable to the employee in the pay prior to the statutory holiday, divided by the number of days worked in the prior pay period.

Poster with coffee cup for President's Breakfast Virtual Series 2021

Let's get #HumberTogether for this year's President's Breakfast.

The President’s Breakfast will be held virtually again this year. Rather than the traditional single-day event, the President’s Breakfast Virtual Series will run for three days (August 30 to September 1).

  • Monday, August 30 at 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. - Live Microsoft Teams event, details to follow
  • Tuesday, August 31 and Wednesday, September 1 will be special editions of  Communiqué delivered to your inbox each morning

Since we haven't been together in person for a while now, we are asking for video submissions from staff. These submissions will be considered for a video montage that will be featured leading up to the President's Breakfast Virtual Series. In particular, we would like video submissions of:

  • What is one thing you are looking forward to with the start of a new academic year?
  • The name of one person who has helped you this past year?
  • Finally, since dancing is a President’s Breakfast tradition, you are invited to share a clip of your best dance moves. We will find a way creative way to highlight members of the Humber community getting into the groove.

Please submit video clips for consideration here by Friday, July 9. *Deadline has been extended to Friday, July 16.

In mid-May, as a result of a recommendation by Toronto Public Health, Humber implemented temperature checks at campus entryways. Following updated recommendations from Toronto Public Health, Humber will suspend this measure after Friday, June 18.

Humber will continue to follow the recommendations of Toronto Public Health, which could potentially include reinstating temperature checks at a future date.

Temperature checks will remain in place for the Truck Driver Training program and for the Child Development Centre.

Public Safety staff will continue to check for completed self-screenings on the Humber Guardian app, or will provide an alternative format, as required.

It is with mixed emotions that I share that April-Dawn Blackwell has accepted an exciting new role as Associate Vice-President of Professional and Continuing Studies at Brock University.

April-Dawn came to Humber in 2018 to take on the role of Associate Dean Pathways in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Innovative Learning. In this role, April-Dawn has provided exceptional leadership to enhance programming, processes, and partnerships. Among her many accomplishments are her championing of GAS faculty to create a Sustainability Stream and two Specializations in our pathway programs, which have attracted the attention of the David Suzuki Foundation, Maclean’s College Guide and Polytechnics Canada; the redesign of the Technology Certificate to differentiate it as unique in the GTA; and, the creation of the first provincial EDI Working Group within the GTA Regional Planning Team for Dual Credit.

April-Dawn has also worked with departments across Humber to improve processes in support of student retention and success; of note is her work on changes to the mid-semester Financial Deregistration practice, and on the creation of a new Financial Resources Hub for students.

During the challenges of the COVID pandemic, April-Dawn has worked tirelessly with faculty to enhance student opportunities and supports, creating a robust advising framework for GAS students, partnering for new programming options for students with multiple Faculties, running a COIL learning opportunity in GAS, enhancing the use of OERs and expanding Dual Credit course offerings. She has also made significant contributions to Humber through her committee work on EDI, Healthy Campus and SEM Student Success and Retention.

While April-Dawn will be missed by many here at Humber, including myself, we wish her continued success in this next step in her professional career. Please join me in congratulating April-Dawn.

With Rani Dhaliwal’s recent decision to retire at the end of 2021, I am delighted to announce that beginning next January, Kelly Jackson will become Vice-President, External Affairs and Professional Learning.

Kelly joined Humber in 2017 to lead an integrated approach to communications, marketing and government relations and has been a member of the executive team since 2019.

The External Affairs and Professional Learning portfolio will bring together a wide range of service departments that support Humber’s external relationships, continuous professional learning, workforce development and access strategies, and reputation management. Each of these areas connect Humber’s vision and priorities to the needs and interests of our learners, alumni, donors, and industry, community and government partners.

Kelly’s responsibilities will include oversight for:

  • Advancement and Alumni
  • Education & Training Solutions
  • Government Relations, Marketing and Communications
  • Community Outreach and Workforce Development, with the exception of Humber’s Community Employment Services
  • Continuous Professional Learning in collaboration with Faculties, Education & Training Solutions and other service delivery providers
  • Ongoing work related to the University of Guelph-Humber, in collaboration with the Senior Vice-President Academic

Humber’s Community Employment Services will remain part of the Students and Institutional Planning portfolio under Jason Hunter’s leadership. Beginning this fall, these services will be aligned to support a more coordinated approach to ensuring successful career outcomes for students and clients. Changes related to the Community Outreach and Workforce Development portfolio will take place effective September.

Kelly and Rani will be working together starting September to support a smooth transition before Rani’s retirement in December.

I am confident that these changes will enable us to ensure we are able to advance our strategic priorities while we continue to navigate a changing environment and the impacts of COVID-19. Please join me in congratulating Kelly on her expanded role.

Chris Whitaker
President, CEO Humber I.T.A.L.
