Cover Up (The Reveal) by Thomas J Price

After a year and a half standing at the entrance to Humber’s Lakeshore Campus, it’s come time for us to say goodbye to Cover Up (The Reveal). We were fortunate enough to receive an extra year with this impressive work, but now it’s headed back to Vancouver to be a part of the Rennie Collection. You’ve only got a couple more weeks to visit this amazing work by Thomas J Price before it leaves August 3

We can’t say thank you enough to The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the Rennie Collection, and Thomas J Price for allowing us to host Cover Up at the Lakeshore Campus for the last 18 months. This work transformed the entrance to the campus and helped us launch our ongoing partnership with The Power Plant and our Campus as a Canvas initiative. We’ll be sad to see it go, but happy to know that it’s going to a whole new location for even more people to enjoy!

The Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC)

Keeping Humber a safe place to work is not limited to the college’s safety policies, and wearing the correct PPE. You can also do your part by reporting any hazards or safety concerns you have. These can include hazards of the work environment, or ongoing/severe stress. Even when property damage or injuries do not actually occur, reporting the hazard can prevent future problems.

So how do you report safety hazards or concerns?

  • If you notice a hazard in your work area, you should report it to your supervisor. They are usually the one to contact first and are usually the best person to address the hazard. If you are unable to contact your supervisor, you can contact any member of the JOHSC or Occupational Health and Safety Services (healthandsafety@humber.ca). For additional contact information, please click on the link below.
  • If the concern is in a common area, like the parking lot or the hallway, and it needs to be addressed right away, please report it immediately to Public Safety (x8500), or Facilities (x4444).

Humber has one JOHSC representing each campus and community employment centre. For more information, meeting dates, workplace inspection schedules, or the contact information of the committee members, please click: https://hrs.humber.ca/safety/joint-health-safety-committee/about.html

Social Innovation Researchers: Sara Nickerson-White and Tina Lackner – Humber researchers shed light on “Hope, Self-Compassion and Authentic Collaboration.”

Sara Nickerson-White and Tina Lackner, faculty members in the Child and Youth Care Practitioner Program here at Humber College, are undertaking a three-year research project aimed at producing a compassion-based, consumer-informed, guiding framework for human services in a Canadian context.

With help from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), these researchers hope to collect and develop an understanding of what human service consumers and professionals experience as hope, self-compassion and authentic collaboration in the course of service delivery; understand the role hope, self-compassion and authentic collaboration play in supporting consumers as they lead self-directed lives during and after human service participation; and develop a compassion-based framework that will strengthen human service delivery in Canada.

Further to the recent announcement from Facilities regarding the repaving of Lot #1, Public Safety will be closing the entrance to the campus through Building L. This closure will remain in effect beyond the expected repaving completion.

Be advised that until August 30, the only access point to the North Campus will be through the main LRC entry doors. As we welcome many of you back to campus in September, more campus access points will be made available. An update message will be sent out mid-to-late August.

Thank you. Stay safe and have a great summer.

After 24 years of outstanding service and dedication to Humber, Nancey Adamson has decided to retire as of August 31, 2021.

In 1997, Nancey joined Humber as the Business Manager in the Office of the Vice President, Business Development. In 2003, she joined the HR team where she held several roles, including Manager, Training and Development; Manager, Employee Engagement; and HR Consultant. In those roles, Nancey developed, implemented, and facilitated many training and engagement programs for staff. She also provided leadership for many of Humber’s recognition programs including the President’s Awards; Career Milestone Awards; Retiree’s Dinner; Support Staff Appreciation Week; and wellness programs. She has also been a guest lecturer, facilitating the Clifton Strengths program for students in the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Health Sciences.

Most recently, Nancey has worked with the Education and Training Solutions team as the HR Manager helping build the HR processes supporting the launch of Humber’s Real Estate Education program. During the pandemic, she played an integral role in the transition of curriculum to the virtual environment for Humber’s Corporate Training Solutions (CTS) department and the Transportation Training Centre. Nancey developed and delivered the very successful "Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)" micro-credential to over 60 senior facilitators and faculty. She also designed the “Producer Course” and has trained 20+ producers to support all CTS virtual courses. Nancey has supported all proposed CTS micro-credentials to ensure quality, consistency, and validated learning and has reviewed over 100 courses for several large organizations.

Nancey has been an active member of the Humber community both internally and externally. Over the years she has been a member of many committees including the President’s Breakfast Planning Committee; Showcase; Residence Appeal Committee; Advancement – Friends and Family Campaign Committee; e-learning Committee; and job evaluation committees. Most notably, Nancey was instrumental in the transformation of Academic Council to Humber College Council. She has served as a member, Vice Chair, Chair and Past Chair over the past 12 years. Nancey also led Humber’s Employee Engagement Committee and five United Way Campaigns. Externally, Nancey has been a member of HRCC, CAAT College Consortium and HRPA committees.

Nancey is a proud graduate of Humber College (Legal Secretarial Diploma and Human Resources Postgraduate Certificate). She has been a dedicated life-long learner throughout her career at Humber completing her Bachelor of Education, Adult Education from Brock University, Master of Arts, Community College from Central Michigan University and PhD in Higher Education from the University of Toronto (OISE) in 2014.

For her dedication and contribution to the college, she was recognized with the Distinguished Administrator Award in 2005.

On behalf of the Education & Training Solutions, Continuous Professional Learning, and the Humber community, I would like to express our sincere thanks to Nancey for her service and many contributions to Humber and wish her all the best in her retirement.

Please share your warm wishes for Nancey by signing the virtual e-card. A departmental farewell will be planned for later in the summer.

The Ministry of Colleges and Universities released a memo on July 16 which states that all in-person instruction and on-campus activities at postsecondary education institutions would be permitted to resume without capacity limits or physical distancing requirements starting in Fall 2021. This direction is contingent on the continued progress of provincewide vaccination rates and continued improvements in public health and health care indicators.

Masks and face coverings will still be required for indoor settings and institutions are required to continue following public health and workplace safety requirements.

The memo indicates institutions continue to have the flexibility to deliver academic instruction in the mode that best suits the needs of students and the individual institution.

Humber College is currently reviewing the memo. Additional details, as they may apply to Humber, will be shared in the coming weeks. We will continue to monitor and keep the Humber community updated.

Humber will continue with our plans to provide a mix of both in-person and interactive online education in the fall 2021 term.

A broader Fall 2021 start-up announcement is planned for mid-to-late August.
