The IGS is pleased to announce the launch of the IGS Career Mentorship Program (CMP) for the winter 2022 term.

The IGS Career Mentorship Program (CMP) aims to support IGS students who are approaching graduation to make a successful and informed transition from IGS into the Canadian workforce.

We are now seeking mentors and invite the Humber community to consider applying to become a mentor supporting IGS students on their path to a successful transition to work in Canada or abroad.

We know the experience will be equally rewarding for both mentors and mentees, and we welcome applications from mentors with the following criteria:

  • Be an international alumni of a program offered at IGS who has graduated in 2019 or earlier OR an industry professional with newcomer/international education experience
  • Be working in their field in Canada, preferably in the GTA
  • Be open to mentoring from one to five mentees at a time
  • Be available and committed to connect with ,entee(s) as per program requirements

Those that do not meet the criteria for international/newcomer experience are welcome to apply. All applications will be reviewed with priority consideration given to those mentors with international/newcomer experience.

Mentors and mentees will receive recognition for their participation in the CMP with a certificate awarded at the end of the program. In addition, mentors will have access to select industry events and learning opportunities at the IGS campus.

The full CMP details and Mentor Application can be found here: IGS Career Mentorship Program (CMP).

Applications will be accepted until December 3, 2021. The CMP will officially begin in January 2022.

For further inquiries on the CMP, please contact Ina Agastra or Vjola Konomi.

After 19 years of outstanding service and dedication to the Humber community and its students, Kristeen Espana, Academic History and Student Records Officer, has decided to enjoy retirement as of December 31, 2021.

Kris’ first role at Humber was in the Contact Centre until she eventually shifted over to calling the Records department home, providing her majority years of service as a Record and Registration Specialist before moving into her current lead role as Academic History and Student Records Officer.

In her previous role of Registration and Records Specialist, she specifically supported programs and tied strong knots with the Faculty of Business. Kris is known for being in the office before 7 a.m., making sure there was always a smiling face ready to greet everyone in Records. Everyone would stop by to say hello every morning as they passed by her cubicle.

Over 19 years, Kris witnessed countless changes in Records and the Office of the Registrar, and each time she challenged herself and others to adapt and excel. She consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, reliability, dependability and a passion to serve students. Her commitment to Humber has been outstanding.

Kris plans to enjoy her retirement by spending time with her family and focusing on self-care including longer vacations and shopping for more shoes.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Kris for her remarkable contributions to Humber. Kris and her love for music, decorating her cubicle and dressing up during Halloween will be greatly missed in our office, but we are happy that she can enjoy this next chapter with her family.

On behalf of the Office of the Registrar and the Humber community at large, we wish Kris all the best in retirement.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to share memories and warm wishes with Kris by signing the virtual greeting card before December 2, 2021.

Thank you.

We are excited to share that Humber College will be moving to 100% Post-Consumer Waste (PCW) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper! In addition to these global standards, the paper we have chosen is ECOLOGO certified, manufactured using Biogas Energy and chlorine-free.

All paper used at Humber will now be made from 100% recycled fibre and has met the FSC's rigorous social and environmental standards. As a result, we will reduce around 54 tonnes of Co2e, which is equivalent to planting 700 trees annually.

Humber has implemented many other initiatives to reduce the use of paper on campus, including DocuSign. Working from home has also significantly contributed to the reduction in paper use.

While some paper use will come back as more folks return to campus, we anticipate that it will likely never be as much as it was due to the tools and practices we have learned these past few years.

With your support, changing to FSC 100% recycled paper and reducing the total amount of paper used will minimize the negative social and environmental impacts that the paper industry has on equity-deserving global communities and our environment.

Using 100% FSC recycled paper is one of the goals in Humber's Sustainability Action Plan. Now more than ever, please consider whether you need to print.

I’m excited to share that this week Estefanía (es-te-fah-nee-ah) Toledo (she/her) will be joining the Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) team in an exciting new role as the Resilience and Inclusive Curriculum Specialist (PT Administration). Estefanía is an emerging critical scholar with over 14 years of experience in Student Affairs and student unions. She’s held a variety of roles such as Graduate Teaching Assistant, Digital Learning and Community Facilitator and Student Rights Advocate, with extensive experience developing learner-centred and evidence-based curriculum and programs.

Estefania is also pursuing a PhD in Higher Education at the University of Toronto where she is examining systemic inequities and barriers impacting historically marginalized and minoritized students. Her work aims to disrupt and dismantle systemic barriers, and create pathways towards equity and justice in education. Her research and practice are grounded in critical theories, social justice, and anti-oppression.

In the Resilience and Inclusive Curriculum Specialist role, she will work collectively with staff and faculty across the College to advance inclusive curriculum by bringing issues of Anti-Black, Anti-Indigeneity, privilege and oppression, white supremacy, and settler colonialism to the forefront of program planning and development opportunities. Estefanía will also be working closely across our functional unit teams in SWEL to bring curricular approaches to our work and help us facilitate deeper connections and storytelling of the impact of our work on student success and wellbeing.

Please join me in welcoming Estefanía to our team!
