Humber College has joined 13 other institutions across North America to become a “Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum,” in partnership with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

The “Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum” program aims to accelerate the infusion of sustainability content into curriculums.

This partnership aligns with the Humber Learning Outcome (HLOs) framework, which is part of Humber’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan. The HLO framework identified Sustainability as one of three key mindsets that unite the Humber community and guide the behaviour and actions of Humber graduates in work and life.

Humber College has been a member of AASHE for several years, and this exciting new partnership will advance our efforts to be a national leader in sustainable campuses.

The President’s Breakfast will be held virtually again this year. Rather than the traditional single-day event, the President’s Breakfast Virtual Series will run for three days (August 30 to September 1).

Since we haven't been together in person for a while now, we are asking for video submissions from staff. These submissions will be considered for a video montage that will be featured leading up to the President's Breakfast Virtual Series. In particular, we would like video submissions of:

  • What is one thing you are looking forward to with the start of a new academic year?
  • The name of one person who has helped you this past year?
  • Finally, since dancing is a President’s Breakfast tradition, you are invited to share a clip of your best dance moves. We will find a way creative way to highlight members of the Humber community getting into the groove.

Please submit video clips for consideration here by Friday, July 16.

The GARDENS Pod project is a community garden initiative in South Etobicoke. Humber is a partner of this project. There are various garden sites (referred to as ‘pods’ - raised garden beds) that are run by a volunteer led team. In these pod sites, fruits, seedlings, and vegetables are planted, harvested, then donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank and LAMP Good Food market.

To ensure the project evolves to meet the needs and wants of community members, we are looking for your ideas on community gardens and food security. Please fill in this two-minute survey and share your views on community gardens and food security in South Etobicoke.

As a thank you for your time, you will also have a chance to win one of four $25 gift cards to the Birds and Beans Café

The survey closes August 6, 2021.

It is with mixed emotions that I share that Mark Ihnat has accepted an exciting new role as Dean, Centre for Teaching and Learning at Georgian College. Mark came to Humber in 2003 as a part-time Sociology and Humanities instructor in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and became a faculty member in 2004. Mark served as program coordinator, eventually moving into the role of Director, eLearning in 2010 and transitioning to role of Associate Dean, Digital Learning in the Centre for Innovative Learning in 2021.

During his 18-year career at Humber, Mark has contributed in numerous ways to Humber’s programs, processes and strategic initiatives, including the digital student feedback questionnaire (SFQ) using the Explorance Blue platform, the Learning Management System (LMS), and the Extended Reality (VR/AR) lab and projects. Mark also managed the Open Learning Centre (OLC), a dedicated student digital learning support service, and was the project lead for over 100 online/hybrid course builds at the diploma and degree levels. In addition, Mark supported various eCampus Ontario funded initiatives, as well as the Humber Innovation of the Year Award winning paramedic virtual reality experience and other extended reality (VR/AR) experiences, including a Red Seal electrician VR simulation build and an AR circuit board training experience.

During the challenges of the COVID pandemic, Mark worked with the Teaching and Learning  team to develop the “10 Step Build initiative” moving Humber’s face-to-face courses to digital offerings, including the training of faculty, acquisition of new software, and development of instructional design workflows, allowing Humber to transition effectively to a remote delivery model. Mark represented Humber externally as chair of the Explorance Colleges Ontario Blue User Group (ECOBUG), as a member of the Ontario Learn Provincial Committee, and as chair of the Education Technology Committee.

Mark will be missed by many here at Humber, and we wish him continued success in this next exciting step in his professional career.
