Sustainability Spotlight: Writing a Sustainable Future

With more than 56,000 students across all campuses, Humber College goes through a large number of writing instruments. Instead of throwing your pens, pencils and markers away, you can recycle them on campus! 

By popular demand, the Office of Sustainability has made new writing instrument recycling boxes.

Here’s how it works:

  • Fill out this form with your name, contact information and office location
  • Once the form has been filled, you can either collect the writing utensil boxes from our office (DX101) or we can deliver it your office

Friendly reminder that if you choose to participate in this program, it is up to your office to deliver the box once filled to the larger recycling boxes - one is outside of IGNITE Student Centre at North and the other is in L Building (2nd floor) at Lakeshore. The Sustainability team collects those boxes monthly and brings them to Staples for recycling.

What type of writing instruments can be recycled? Most types! 

  • All pen, mechanical pencil and marker brands 
  • Any ink colour 
  • Markers including dry erase and permanent 
  • If you write with it, it can be collected for recycling!

The wait is almost over! Our brand new Human Resource Management System (HRMS) will be launching soon.

In November 2018, Lori A. Diduch, Vice-President, Human Resources & Organizational Effectiveness communicated an important HRMS Project Go Live Update with you, where she stressed the importance of system performance and accuracy. Getting the solution right has been critical to ensure a seamless experience for you. We are happy to announce today that a great deal of progress has been made over the past several months and you will get access to the new system very soon.

In the meanwhile, please keep a lookout for our upcoming communique announcements where we will be sharing more details with you regarding upcoming events, training sessions and the Go-Live date.

Don’t know what HRMS is?

The Human Resource Management System (HRMS), is a new Human Capital Management fully integrated, cloud-based system that will replace Humber's existing legacy system. The new HRMS will serve as a central source of information for all HR related processes and programs, making it accessible to staff, faculty and other stakeholders through their computer, on or off campus.

Once deployed, the new HRMS provides access to core HR functions, based on your profile as a manager or an employee. Some functionality includes:

  • Entering and tracking attendance
  • Benefits enrollment
  • Entering and approving time
  • Talent management (Which includes Recruitment)
  • And much more!

This would allow HR to:

  • Become Better business partners to faculties and departments
  • Deliver real-time data & information that will improve decision-making
  • Have enhanced reporting capability
  • Streamline processes to enable faster transactions

For managers and employees, the direct access functionality will become the new way of interacting with HR giving you the flexibility, autonomy and a sense of ownership for a better overall manager and employee experience.

As we get ready to ‘Go Live’ all impacted stakeholders will be receiving training information to ensure that the transition to the new HRMS is easy and seamless.

Retirement Celebration for Marsha Barrett

Marsha Barrett has been a treasured faculty and team member in the Early Childhood Education department since 2006. Marsha has also been a valued team member in the Centre for Teaching and Learning for the last several years as co-facilitator of the Teaching Excellence Program. Marsha’s commitment to teaching and learning excellence, to students, to colleagues and the early childhood community has been significant. As such, please join the Humber community in wishing her well for her retirement.

In this interactive ‘ virtual trip down the grocery aisles’,  recognized Registered Dietitian Lucia Weiler will share her top tips to help you make smart food choices for health and wellness. You will also build confidence in reading labels so your food shopping can get easier, healthier and less expensive.

The CTL is excited to announce a call for applications for the next Scholarly Writing Boot Camp, taking place June 25-27, 2019 in the CTL's new space at Lakeshore Campus (H206).

The deadline for applications is June 15, 2019.

This retreat provides consolidated, protected time for faculty to work on a scholarly writing project (e.g. journal article, book chapter, dissertation). Snacks, lunch and beverages are provided.

World Environment Day is on June 5 and the theme this year is air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, every year around seven million premature deaths are attributable to air pollution– that's about 13 people every minute! 

Air pollution is all around us: indoors, outdoors, in cities and in the countryside but there are ways to reduce the amount of pollution we're creating. We're challenging Humber to #BeatAirPollution, complete as many activites as you can on the #BeatAirPollution challenge checklist and you can win a Humber Room giftcard for two! 

Here's how to take the challenge: 

  1. Download the #BeatAirPollution Challenge Checklist (below)
  2. Complete as many activities on the checklist as you can (bonus if you take pictures) by Sunday, June 9th
  3. Send your completed checklist to sustainability@humber.ca OR post it on social media and tag @SustainHumber
  4. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 10

Lakeshore Campus Lot 1 (North & South-East Sections) Temporary Closure

Please be advised that Lakeshore Campus Parking Lot 1 has been selected as a holding area for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer event taking place from June 4 to 10, 2019. As a result, the North and South-East sections of Lot 1 will be reserved for the group on a 24-hour basis. The group will enter and exit Lot 1 via their dedicated Lakeshore Blvd. entrance.

Public Safety will be staffed overnight while this group is on Humber property. The group will have 24-hour access to Lot 1 from June 4 to 10. 

Humber Staff and guests are encouraged to use the entrance and exit to Lot 1 located off of Twenty Third Street and park in the North and South-West section of the lot.

Partial Load Registry

Please register for Partial Load Work for 2020 by October 30, 2019.

About the Registry (Article 26.10)

The Partial-Load Registry is in place for current or previously employed partial-load employees of Humber College to register their interest in being employed as a partial load faculty for the 2020 calendar year.  Registered partial-load employees will be eligible to receive priority hiring for available partial load work based on the criteria set out in Article 26.10 of the OPSEU Academic Collective Agreement.

When and where do I register?

We are pleased to announce that registration for the 2020 calendar year will begin on June 10, 2019. We strongly encourage you to register prior to the October 30, 2019 deadline.

In order to access the Partial Load Registry, please find the access point on the front page of the Humber Human Resources webpage or go to the link at: hrs.humber.ca/partialloadregistry

Once you register, you will receive a confirmation response which should be retained for your records.

New NRCan Funding Stream: Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada

National Resources Canada (NRCan) announces an investment of up to $30 million for a new initiative called Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada (BESC) that will foster cutting-edge companies to deliver game-changing clean energy innovations to the market.

Launched under a new stream of NRCan's Energy Innovation Program, in partnership with Breakthrough Energy, BESC is a first-of-its-kind public–private initiative aimed at accelerating the development of clean energy technologies in the electricity, transportation, buildings and manufacturing sectors with the potential for substantial pollution reductions globally.
