To raise money for the Interior Design 2020 Thesis show, the thesis team members have organized a Holiday Ornament event!

The event will be hosted on December 4 and 5 in the Food Emporium, located in K building.

Ornaments will be sold for $3 each or four for $10.

The handmade wood ornaments were designed and made on campus in the Humber Design Centre’s maker lab using a laser engraver.

We hope to see you all there!

Give the gift of education this Giving Tuesday!

The gift of education is one that lasts a lifetime – one that has the power to impact so many lives for the better.

But when a student struggles financially, that gift can simply be out of reach.

Today, on Giving Tuesday, charities and not-for-profits around the world are raising funds for important projects with big impact – and this includes Humber College. As part of this movement, we are asking our community, including dedicated and hard-working staff and faculty, to create unlimited possibilities for Humber students by giving back.

Your gift will make a difference, ensuring our students graduate, find meaningful work and ultimately make an even greater impact on the world.

‘Tis the season for giving. Please consider giving the gift of education to our students today. If you are interested in making your donation through ongoing payroll deductions, please click here.

Your donation will also count toward your participation in Humber Gives (our staff and faculty campaign) and to our $50-million Unlimited Campaign. Stay tuned for more exciting information about Humber Gives in the New Year.

Humber Global Delves into the African Canadian Experience with the Pathway to Freedom Historical Tour

Throughout the year, Humber’s International Centre organizes a variety of events and trips to help students get settled in their new surroundings and become familiar with Canada’s diverse customs, culture and history. Our most recent educational trip was a historical tour to southwestern Ontario to visit the sites of the Underground Railroad. Where a number of African Americans settled in the 19th century seeking safety, peace and freedom from slavery in the United States.

This special trip was an inspiring experience for students, as well as the participating staff and alumni. It’s an example of how Humber mobilizes and harnesses our diversity to help each other understand the range of experiences that make up Canada and our community.

Panopto

Hello Humber! We have another Panopto news update to share with the community.

Since our update to the community at the end of September, Panopto has continued to grow in usage, and we are thrilled to share the numbers in comparison.

  • 2,600+ users (growth of 1,600+)
  • 6,000+ videos (from 2,800+ in October)

Check out the new and improved “Resources” section on Humber’s Panopto Portal for quick self-serve guidance on how to create, upload, and share your Panopto videos.

Here are a few ways in which you can leverage Panopto to support you and your students towards the end of the semester:

  • Create a 2-3 minute video explaining the top 3 challenging topics of the week/month.
  • Use the Panopto Desktop App to capture your face, voice, and screen, and provide your students with video-based feedback.
  • Create a quick video tutorial showing your students how to use specialized equipment; use Panopto for iOS or Panopto for Android to quickly share it with your students.

Migration Notice

Humber’s Panopto Support Team is actively working with Panopto to have Humber’s platform moved to Canadian servers. The migration will have minimal impact on the community. The migration will take place in Winter 2020 semester. We will send an update with advance notice, which will include everything you’ll need to know.

Training

Workshops and on-demand training options remain available to all faculty and staff throughout Fall 2019. Visit the newly-developed events calendar for a current listing, or keep an eye out on the Communiqué for further updates.

Closing Notes

If you have any questions about Panopto at Humber, or have any feedback or success stories, feel free to reach out to Humber’s Panopto Support Team, who will be happy to assist.

If you haven’t hopped on board with Panopto just yet – we highly encourage you to login and discover just how easy it is to create engaging, effective videos. Login today!

After 26 years, Dr. Wendy O’Brien has decided to retire from teaching to pursue her other passions. Wendy has made significant contributions to Humber programs by developing some of the very first Degree breadth courses, including Theories of Beauty, still one of our most popular courses. She was also instrumental in inspiring our incoming degree students by leading active and engaging sessions during orientation week.

Wendy is a staunch supporter of Liberal Education in our diploma programs as well. Early in her career, she was a key contributor to our foundational course (then known as HUMA 024) by writing an introductory piece on A Brief History of the Self which appeared in three editions of the textbook and was taught by nearly every faculty member. Most importantly, Wendy has supported approximately 4,500 students in finding their way into areas of philosophy ranging from esthetics and ethics to epistemology.

Wendy immerses herself in her interests. As a lifelong learner, she returned to university to complete her doctoral degree while a full-time faculty member. As an avid reader, she hosted the By the Lake Book Club for 10 years. As an art aficionado, she joined the Art Gallery of Ontario as a tour Instructor. I’m excited to know what her newest adventure will be. For those of you in FLA, Wendy will attend the Holiday Event on December 12 where you may be able to catch up and learn more about her plans for the New Year.

Please join me in congratulating Wendy on her retirement!
