The School of Applied Technology is pleased to represent Humber at EDIT: Expo for Design, Innovation & Technology, a unique collaboration between the Design Exchange and the UNITED NATIONS Development Programme (UNDP). EDIT is an immersive expo-meets-festival designed to celebrate the innovative work addressing global challenges such as ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, making cities more sustainable, and combatting climate change.

The theme of the Humber exhibit is “Sustainability by Design”.

Sustainability is one of Humber’s core values and we are focused on making a positive impact on our local, regional and global communities. From how we design our built environment, interact with the physical environment, and in the way we teach and learn, Humber is building a better tomorrow. Student work is represented from the following Applied Technology programs: Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Interior Design, Architectural Technology, and, Sustainable Energy and Building Technology.

Exhibit Highlights:

Student work from Industrial Design and Sustainable Energy and Building Technology are represented at EDIT:

Bachelor of Industrial Design

The exhibit at EDIT brings together Industrial Design student thesis projects that focus on health and wellness and our future built environment.

Sustainable Energy and Building Technology Advanced Diploma

Under the leadership of 3rd year student Zack Pennock, the SEHOW (Sustainable Energy Hands-On Workshop) Student Club partnered with Chartwell’s, a food services company, to design and build a campus hydroponics table that can grow high quality produce indoors without soil, while consuming fewer resources and taking up less space than traditional methods. The hydroponic table exhibit is an example of sustainable and responsible food production which can be scaled for residential use or commercial purposes.

All of our past publications are available for purchase, plus we’re proud to present a brand-new, FREE downloadable eBook: Mapping Nations, Locating Citizens: Interdisciplinary Discussions on Nationalism and Identity, a selection of the proceeds of the second annual HLA @IFOA conference, edited by professor Daniel Hambly.

We are also happy to make available, for the first time, a free eBook of Remembering World War I: Perspectives at the Centenary—a selection of papers from the first annual HLA @IFOA conference. (Paperback copies are still available for purchase!)

Many thanks to Dowattie Nandkumar and Kathy Nguyen at Humber’s Centre for Teaching & Learning for their hard work on the new site.

The Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness is collaborating with the Humber Arboretum, School of Applied Technology, TD Friends of the Environment, and the community to create Humber's Food Learning Garden.

The purpose of the Food Learning Garden in the Humber Arboretum is to provide a space to learn about local, healthy food and urban agriculture. The garden will be used primarily to:

  • Support the learning of Humber College students from a broad range of programs and departments as they help to build, maintain, and utilize the garden for their studies;
  • Incorporate local, healthy food grown by Humber College work-study students and Humber Arboretum staff into the menu of the Humber Room. Food will be harvested by students and staff from Humber’s School of Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation; and
  • Educate and inspire children, youth, and community members taking part in the Humber Arboretum’s school, community, and camp programs.

The Learning Garden will be another step towards demnostrating Humber's leading role in sustainability and healthy child development.

On November 16th, 2017, the Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness will be hosting an interactive symposium at the Centre for Urban Ecology in the Humber Arboretum wherein Humber and the community will be encouraged to identity local food issues affecting food security and health in our local community.

The Community Outreach and Workforce Development Department is pleased to be welcoming Nivedita Lane to the team as our new Manager of Community Partnership Development. Over the past few years Nivedita has held the position of Coordinator of the First Year Transition Program at Humber College in the Student Success and Engagement Department. In this capacity she has also been responsible for developing and implementing the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Toronto “Pumped for Post-Secondary” program in collaboration with the School of Liberal Arts and Science.

Nivedita brings a strong background in community development and program evaluation.
