It is with mixed emotions, I am announcing that Dr. Krista Holmes will be leaving Humber to pursue an opportunity at George Brown College to become their new Director, Research and Innovation. The position will allow her to explore further professional development opportunities at a top tier polytechnic.

Krista joined Applied Research and Innovation at Humber in 2011 as Research Coordinator and progressively moved into senior roles until her appointment in 2016 as Associate Dean, Research & Innovation where she was accountable for the leadership, initiation, operational excellence and coordination of the applied research portfolio for the college. During her time in the Office of Applied Research & Innovation, Krista led many successful initiatives including establishing and managing research support services and staff, facilitating the development of academic school research plans, encouraging scholarly activities, supporting applied research projects and programming, and promoting College research initiatives to government, industry and the community.

We are looking for donations of gently used clothing for our Trans Day of Visibility Clothing Swap.

Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), also known as International Transgender Day of Visibility, is celebrated annually on March 31st. American trans activist Rachel Crandall founded the holiday in 2009 as a way to celebrate the lives of trans people all over the world, and raise awareness of transphobia and discrimination. Crandall felt that the transgender community needed a positive holiday, as the only time you would hear about trans people was on Trans Day of Remembrance, a day of mourning for the lives lost to transphobia.

This year the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre is celebrating TDOV with a Clothing Swap! We want to provide a safer space for trans and gender diverse folks to exchange clothes, as many trans folks do not have access to clothes that they feel matches their gender expression. This event is centred around affirming and celebrating gender identity and gender expression in whatever form that takes. We know that clothes do not define us, but they can be an important part of our jouney.

LGBTQ+ Resource Centres at North (E140) and Lake (WEL211) will be accepting clothing donations up until March 26th.

Anyone is welcome to donate any clothes that are in good condition, but the clothing swap itself is for trans and gender diverse folks.

Humber College is pleased to announce the Indigenous Knowledge Gathering held at Humber College from March 22 - 24, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario. In partnership with the Aboriginal Resource Centre, and the Schools of Social and Community Services, Creative and Performing Arts, and Health Sciences, the gathering will bring together a broad range of voices and perspectives, engaging Elders, community leaders, First Nation youth, alumni and Indigenous learners across Ontario and beyond.

Future generations inherit the worlds we create. Everything we do has an impact, not only on this generation but also generations to come. With the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC)'s Final Report and Calls to Action (2015), many Canadians began to consider the meaning of reconciliation and whether it has the power to forge new relationships. The reality is that there is no simple way to decolonize centuries of educational experience, just as there is no straightforward path that can lead to reconciliation. True and meaningful reconciliation requires a new paradigm, building relationships of mutual respect and a resurgence of Indigenous self-determinism in lifeways and educational practice. Reconciliation requires us to consider the steps we take, creating paths through learning and action. Encompassing interconnected features of language, lands and waterscapes, ceremonial cycles, ways of knowing and being, histories, and contemporary experiences, Indigenous education is, at its core, a process of revitalization. We hope the gathering can serve as a place of learning and sharing for all who are engaged in Indigenous education. Join us as we look to the future! Niigaaninaabe.

Denny Christianson conducting

It is with mixed emotions that I announce the retirement of Denny Christianson from Humber College effective August 31, 2018. For the past 17 years, Denny has served as the program coordinator for Humber’s renowned Bachelor of Music degree program and the former Advanced Diploma program in music.

As the founding director of the music degree, Denny collaborated with music faculty to create the most comprehensive undergraduate music program in Canada. By combining the latest recording technologies and entrepreneurial business strategies with performance, production, songwriting, and composition in jazz, pop, R&B, Latin and world music, this program consistently produces many of the most successful and versatile musicians and music industry professionals in Canada and abroad.

Denny has recorded or produced hundreds of commercials, TV shows, albums and movie soundtracks. Before joining Humber in 2001, he was best known for directing the Denny Christianson Big Band and for his 30-year career as a brass musician in Los Angeles, Montreal, and Toronto. He performed and recorded with greats such as Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Pepper Adams, Diane Shurr, Tony Bennett, Michel Legrand, Bill Holman, Carmen McRae, Ed Shaughnessy, Hubert Laws, J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Benny Carter, Steve Gadd, Sweets Edison, Kenny Drew, Mose Allison, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and many others. He also worked for several years on TV with Sammy Davis, Jr.

Denny has inspired students by connecting them with incredible faculty and other industry pros, and he has been responsible for bringing to Humber some of the biggest names in jazz, including Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Kurt Elling, and Michael Brecker.

We will always be grateful to Denny for his unwavering commitment to the students, faculty and staff at Humber, for being dedicated to world-class education, and for believing people should live their dreams, follow their passion, and share with the world.

Please join me in thanking Denny Christianson for his outstanding service to Humber, and congratulating him on starting the next exciting chapter. Thank you, Denny!

Sincerely,

Steve Bellamy
Dean, School of Creative & Performing Arts
