I am writing to share the news with you that Kathy Ullyott has accepted the role of Program Head, Media Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH), effective October 1.

Kathy served as the Assistant Program Head of Media Studies from 2013-18, and in August 2018 she stepped in as Acting Program Head. Over the years, Kathy worked closely with former Media Studies Program Head, Jerry Chomyn, on all aspects of program and curriculum development. Kathy also spearheaded Emerge – a capstone course for fourth-year students, including three magazines, a one-day media conference and related digital, videographic and marketing initiatives.

Prior to joining UofGH, Kathy enjoyed a career as a top-level editor at a number of Canada’s most-read magazines, where she oversaw staff of up to 40 individuals in print, digital, photographic and design roles, managed annual budgets and developed a deep network of media industry contacts.

I hope you will join us in congratulating Kathy on her new role as Program Head at UofGH.

With thanks,

Dr. John Walsh

Developing yourself is the key to success in your organization. Learning to work well in difficult situations reduces stress and the ability to understand yourself and those around you is a skill to help you achieve that goal.

This session will introduce subject areas that will enable you to put some balance back into the workplace. Understanding the importance of human relations will guide you through challenging times. If you feel you are always giving with not getting, this session is for you.

Objectives:

  1. Define the difference between technical skills and human relation skills
  2. Identify traits of positive and negative attitudes
  3. Identify the relationship between success and a positive attitude

Autumn is firmly upon us, and there is lots of scholarly activity happening this month in the CTL! We’re happy to share the latest edition of Scholars & Co., highlighting many of these initiatives. In particular, we’d like to draw your attention to the drop-in research consultation sessions being offered by the CTL SoTL team this month. These are opportunities for faculty that may be working on a research project (through the Innovation Fund, Applied Research, graduate credentials, or anything else in between), and would like help or advice with a research- or data-related question.

For more information about anything in the newsletter, please contact CTLResearch@humber.ca.

I’m pleased to announce the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology Policy (hereafter referred to as “the Policy”), which specifies the terms and conditions by which the Humber Arboretum’s lands, services and facilities may be used. The Policy has been approved by the Humber Arboretum’s Management Committee (which includes senior representatives from the Humber Arboretum’s three founding partners- Humber College, TRCA, and City of Toronto), as well as by Humber College Executive.

The Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology includes 250 acres of land comprising woody and herbaceous plant collections, wildlife habitat, and natural areas. It also includes The Centre for Urban Ecology, a sustainable building located within the Humber Arboretum, built to serve the Humber Arboretum’s purpose. As outlined in the Humber Arboretum’s Tripartite Agreement, the Humber Arboretum’s purpose is:

  1. To establish and maintain a comprehensive, aesthetically pleasing collection of woody and herbaceous plants;
  2. To demonstrate correct arboricultural and horticultural techniques through responsible development and maintenance practices;
  3. To protect natural areas through appropriate conservation and restoration practices;
  4. To facilitate a range of educational and research opportunities in arboriculture and horticulture and environmental studies;
  5. To establish and promote the Humber Arboretum as a resource that is an integral part of the Greater Toronto community and an attraction for national and international visitors;
  6. To establish, maintain, and encourage Wildlife habitat; and
  7. To create and maintain a Centre for Urban Ecology that will serve as a gathering point, with functional laboratory and classroom facilities.

The Humber Arboretum’s lands, services and facilities are a resource for the general public as well as for Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber community members. The Policy specifies the terms and conditions by which the Humber Arboretum’s lands, services and facilities may be used.

The Policy in its entirety can be found here: humber.ca/policies/humber-arboretum-and-centre-urban-ecology-policy

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or if you would like to learn more.

Sincerely,

Alexandra Link

Employment Equity at Humber College

"It is not that individuals in the designated groups are inherently unable to achieve equality on their own, it is that the obstacles in their way are so formidable and self-perpetuating that they cannot be overcome without intervention. It is both intolerable and insensitive if we simply wait and hope that the barriers will disappear with time. Equality in employment will not happen unless we make it happen." - Judge Rosalie Silberman Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment, 1985

Humber College is committed to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

What is Employment Equity?

Employment Equity is an on-going planning process used by an employer to:

  • identify and eliminate barriers in an organization's employment policies and procedures;
  • put into place positive policies and practices to ensure the effects of systemic barriers are eliminated; and
  • ensure appropriate representation of identified group members throughout their workforce.

What is the goal of Employment Equity?

  • eliminate employment barriers for the designated groups: women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal people, members of racialized groups. At Humber, we provide persons with the opportunity to identify their sexual and gender identity.
  • remedy past discrimination in employment opportunities and prevent future barriers;
  • improve access and distribution throughout all occupations and at all levels for members of the identified groups; and
  • foster a climate of equity and inclusion in the organization.

Humber College complies voluntarily with the Employment Equity Act under the Federal Contractors Program.

Please visit the Centre website for more information about Humber’s Employment Equity Program.

I’m proud to introduce the Humber Arboretum’s 2017-18 Annual Report. This report outlines our successes from an exciting year, including accomplishing 96% of the goals set forth in our 2017-18 Business Plan. To recap, our top priorities for the year were to:

  1. Enhance and maintain our outdoor learning, recreation, and natural spaces for the wellbeing of our community.
  2. Provide valuable, meaningful learning opportunities for Humber College students.
  3. Provide quality education programs, outreach activities, and camps to enhance our community’s knowledge about sustainability and strengthen their connection with our natural environment.

We had many significant accomplishments this year related to these priorities – we envisioned and built the Humber Food Learning Garden, contributed to the education of more than 4,000 Humber College students, and debuted our popular Sustainable Urban Beekeeping Certificate. A highlight of the year was being part of the leadership team that created Toronto’s new Ravine Strategy. The Arboretum is looking forward to bringing the strategy to life through our Humber Pond Project in the years to come.

This year saw an increase in the scope of our public events, educational programming being made available to a wider audience, and growing involvement with far-reaching environmental initiatives. We were pleased to expand our partnerships, host more than 14,000 visitors for our educational events and activities, and to provide curriculum-connected educational programs for 8,300 schoolchildren from across the GTA. The cumulative impact of this work is immeasurable, both for our local community and for the sustainability of our planet.

As always, we do this work to support the priorities of our three founding partners: Humber College, City of Toronto, and Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA). I thank them for believing in and for championing us. I also thank our staff for their hard work, resourcefulness, and collaboration this year.

To view our Annual Report in its entirety, please see here.

Sincerely,

Alexandra (Alix) Link
