In 2016, Humber College, in partnership with The City of Toronto’s Youth Equity Strategy, Amadeusz, and The Laidlaw Foundation, launched a research project titled Look at my Life: Youth Identified ‘Sparks’ for Firearm Possession Among Young People in Toronto.

Tina-Nadia Gopal-Chambers, a faculty member in the School of Social and Community Services, was the Principal Researcher on the project. The research findings were released this week which identified the following influences that contribute to young people becoming involved in crime:

  • Risk factors, including trauma, family environment, lack of non-family adults/mentors, lack of community programs, negative peers, and negative school experiences;
  • Systemic barriers, including racism, poverty, lack of community safety; and
  • Barriers after being incarcerated, including accessing employment due to a criminal record and a lack of education, and returning to the same environment with little support.

A copy of the report is available at: amadeusz.ca/research-2.

Humber College Applied Research & Innovation is proud to be a key partner on this timely research and we thank Tina-Nadia Gopal-Chambers for her contributions.

Receiving your list of required course materials allows us to source all available options (new, used, print, digital, etc.) for incoming students, as well as provide the optimum value to students who are selling books. Timely submission of requests ensures that we have plenty of time to source and order all of your materials before the start of Fall classes. Currently, we have received 30% of the requests at Lakeshore Campus and 40 per cent at North Campus.

Over the past decade publishers have implemented a wide variety of delivery options for their course materials. Each version has its own unique ISBN as an identifier. The Campus Store has the ability to provide all options for the majority of materials requested

  • Custom textbooks (reduced chapters or combination of multiple texts into a single volume)
  • Bundles - two or more print components, or a print version with a code to access online content. Please let us know if the online content is required for your course or simply recommended. This will assist us in providing more price options for your students.
  • Digital - PDF or Adaptive Learning version (i.e. MyLab, Connect, Wiley Plus, etc.)

To submit your list of course materials you may use our Online Adoption tool. To access to this service for the North Campus, please visit humbershop.ca. For the Lakeshore Campus please visit humberlakeshoreshop.ca. Scroll to the bottom of either homepage and from under the heading Faculty Services, select Online Adoptions. You will be asked to login or register. For first time users, the generic password is 0947, and for Lakeshore it is 0948. If you prefer a paper copy of your previous term information, either store this information upon request.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. We are here to answer your questions and will gladly walk you through the online adoption process should you require assistance. We look forward to receiving your list of Fall course materials.

SMSIT Summer Social Media Program

The School of Media Studies and Information Technology recently concluded another successful Social Media Summer Program, a collaborative initiative with Business Academy Aarhus (BAAA), one of our partner institutions in Denmark. From July 9-20, students from BAAA and Humber shared a classroom at Lakeshore Campus. This year we also welcomed a student from Sinclair Community College in the United States.

In this innovative course, taught by faculty from both Humber and BAAA, students discovered how to create relevant and meaningful social media content, and apply effective communication strategies across various platforms. The course included exclusive visits at Microsoft and Shopify, various industry guest speakers, and concluded with students presenting pitch projects to a real Toronto client, Flarian. “Social media is changing all the time. I’m glad to be a part of the evolution!” said one Humber student.

Beyond the classroom, the students built meaningful relationships, expanded their international network, and appreciated the opportunity to learn in such a culturally diverse group of people. They all walk away from this experience with a new, global perspective on social media.

Schuyler Esen from Sinclair Community College warmly reflected on her experience: “This time in Toronto was such an eye opening experience for me as a student and as an American, and I will cherish the lessons I’ve learned both in and out of the classroom for the rest of my life.”

For more information about this program, please contact Aimee Ferre at aimee.ferre@humber.ca.

SSHRC and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) are partnering to offer a new joint initiative aimed at funding research related to housing in order to help set the stage for the creation of a Collaborative Housing Research Network. Research projects undertaken by teams composed of academics as well as non-academics will focus on 5 priority areas that were determined by CMHC:

  1. Housing for those in greatest need
  2. Community Housing Sustainability
  3. Northern Housing
  4. Sustainable Housing and Communities
  5. Balanced Supply of Housing

The first stage of this two stage competition will be through the Partnership Development Grants and are valued at $80,000 over one year. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a proposal at the second stage of the Partnership Grants. Application forms will be available at the beginning of August 2018 with a November 15, 2018 deadline.

In addition, in the context of their partnership, SSHRC and CMHC are also offering postdoctoral fellowships to individuals conducting humanities and social sciences research in housing-related areas. Each fellowship is valued at $40,500 per year and is tenable for up to 24 months. Further information can be found on the CMHC National Housing Strategy website. Candidates must apply through SSHRC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship funding opportunity and select the CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Training Awards Program from the drop-down menu in their application form. They will also be required to provide a justification as to why their research should be considered for these awards. Candidates will have until September 20, 2018 to apply.

If you are interested in applying for this funding opportunity or if you would like more information about Applied Research & Innovation opportunities at Humber, please contact Crystal Williams (crystal.williams@humber.ca).

The Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber communities are upset and saddened by the events that took place along the Danforth yesterday.

On Tuesday, July 24, flags at all campuses will be flown at half-mast out of respect for the victims of this terrible incident and their families. Our thoughts are with them, as well as the first responders, witnesses and everyone else impacted. Those on the scene – first responders and witnesses alike - exhibited great bravery and compassion.

Humber and U of G-H are committed to supporting all members of our community. If needed, students are encouraged to seek support from the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (humber.ca/student-life/swac).

Employees can contact the Employee Assistance Program.

For those wishing to donate blood, visit blood.ca/en/donate to find a clinic close to you.

It is during difficult times like these that the Humber and Guelph-Humber communities have shown our ability to come together for each other and for the people of Toronto.
