Fibre Optic/Radiant Light 2 is installed in the North Campus Learning Resource Commons, a campus expansion building that houses the campus library, student services, the Registrar’s Office, Student Recruitment, Student Success & Engagement, the International Centre, the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences and administrative offices. The artworks’ position in proximity to natural light allows the 75” by 100” piece to engage in an interplay of pattern, cast colour, light and shadow as onlookers witness a display of colour in the spectrum of cyan, blue, magenta and gold.

The material behind this installation is dichroic glass, an architectural window film that exploits the optical qualities of the material and activates the space creating a new sensorial and ambient experience. Under Lizz Aston’s skilful hand, dichroic film has been projected, drawn and hand-cut, making it a unique installation designed specifically for the space.

Those familiar with Aston’s style will instantly place her exploration of old and new materials and forms of contemporary art in Fibre Optic/Radiant Light 2. Her extensive education has given her a strong framework from which she reflects upon in her own artistic practice:

“In my work, I am inspired by the rich histories of textile production, lace-making and the decorative arts. Focusing on themes surrounding knot-work and interlacement, my work explores the intersection between traditional craft practice, contemporary art and design,” says Aston. “By taking imagery lifted from traditionally hand-made objects, and playing with methods of abstraction using digital tools, my work deconstructs formal patterns in unexpected ways to create a series of three-dimensional large-scale distorted and exploded views.”

This commission was developed through Humber’s Art Collection, which is a part of Humber’s ongoing practice of developing innovative teaching and learning opportunities. The installation is now available for public viewing on the 5th floor of the LRC, in an active public area just outside of the School of Liberal Arts and Science at Humber North Campus.

About HUMBER GALLERIES AND COLLECTIONS:

The Humber Galleries Art Collection complements the activities of our galleries by offering students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to encounter art around the campuses, making it part of the day-to-day culture of the college, but also providing access to integrated curriculum planning, student research and skills development. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for students, staff and the community to learn and grow through interaction with a diverse collection of contemporary Canadian art and artists.

About LIZZ ASTON:

Aston’s distinct style of working with delicate yet sculptural materials has earned her ample attention in magazines like Canadian Art and beyond. In addition, she has exhibited her work across Canada and in the United States, Australia and South Korea and has partnered with H&M Canada for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, 3M and The Japanese Paper Place. Aston, who holds an Advanced Diploma in Crafts & Design from Sheridan College, is currently completing an Industrial Design degree from OCAD University.

Faculty Representative

Henri Bérubé

PLEASE VOTE HENRI BÉRUBÉ FOR FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE ON OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

I am requesting your support for candidacy to the position of Faculty Representative on the Humber Board of Governors.

I believe the combination of my academic experience and committed involvement in the Humber College community makes me an ideal candidate for this role.

My resume encompasses 11 years at Humber, including 8 as Program Coordinator in PFP/PSI. In 2012, I was elected Chair of Humber College Council and focused on transitioning Council into an effective community voice reporting to the President. Additionally, I served on the 2013-18 Strategic Planning Committee and most recently on the Academic Strategic Plan Task Force.

I have also represented faculty on various committees including Parking, the Bookstore & Traumatic Event Support Team. I have sat on and chaired numerous other committees at the local, provincial and international levels earning a reputation as an innovator, team player, pragmatist and visionary.

I am honoured to have received numerous awards including the Student Services Faculty Recognition Award (2015), Distinguished Faculty Award (2009) and Faculty of the Year Award (2006 - Guelph Humber).

As a 20-year police veteran I also received the Distinguished Service and Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medals, CPP of the Year for Canada (ASIS Intl) and ISCPP Crime Prevention Unit Member Worldwide Award. I have lectured extensively throughout North America and have published numerous written works internationally.

During the last 4 years I have embraced an emerging culture of transparency and inclusion while focusing on Humber’s polytechnic mission. My goal in this election is to seize all opportunities, put strong voices in positions of responsibility and continually aim to improve our institution. Using best practice and precedent as a starting point, we can shape the future of post-secondary education and nurture a new learning environment, uniting all stakeholders in one common goal – to be the best. To succeed in this mission, we need strong faculty representation on the Board of Governors.

I hope to earn your vote and be given the opportunity to represent faculty interests with integrity, courage and a passionate voice – continuing to move Humber forward at the strategic level.

Michele Calpin

PLEASE VOTE MICHELE CALPIN FOR FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE ON OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

I’m a Professor and the Program Coordinator of the Bachelor of Commerce Finance Degree Program in the Business School. The role of the Humber Board of Governors is to establish the goals and strategic direction of the College and ensure that it operates effectively. While not specifically stated in the Board by-laws, I feel that the faculty representative should also ensure that faculty needs and perspectives are understood and addressed by the Board and that professors are kept apprised of Board deliberations. I believe my background affords me the experience to serve this role well.

As a Program Coordinator, I have experience working with a broad cross-section of faculty and understanding curriculum and teaching and learning priorities. I helped establish and participate on the Bachelor of Commerce Finance Degree Program Advisory Committee. I was asked to serve as a member of Humber’s Employee Engagement Committee. For the past year our committee has been developing initiatives to help address three main issues highlighted by Humber employees: communication, recognition and change management. This experience has given me a cross-Humber perspective of faculty needs and exposure to the processes of College Council and the Humber Executive.

I have considerable business experience and throughout my career have worked with several Boards in helping them develop strategic and operational plans. Prior to working at Humber, I was a Management Consultant for over eight years with McKinsey & Company; a strategy consulting firm providing guidance to executive teams in Fortune 500 companies in Canada and the U.S.

I’m excited about the opportunity to represent Humber faculty on the Humber Board of Governors to help shape the College’s strategic and operational priorities and to ensure Humber’s commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.

Thank you for your consideration. Vote Michele Calpin.

Jeff Short

PLEASE VOTE JEFF SHORT FOR FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE ON OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

My name is Jeff Short and I am asking to represent you at our Board of Governors. I am a community-minded faculty member with The Business School who takes great pride in helping our newest students adjust to the challenges of college, as well as preparing our graduates for success in a competitive career landscape. For over 10 years I have actively worked with our colleagues, students and friends to grow our capacity for teaching excellence and to build a community that is collegial, friendly, and socially and intellectually rewarding for all of us. Like you, I came to Humber because I love teaching and want to make a positive difference for others.

Prior to joining Humber I completed an MBA specializing in Strategic Management and Organizational Behaviour and was responsible for the delivery of over $250M in programs and services across Ontario. I have experience analyzing extremely large budgets and proposals, and can offer both practical and long-term perspectives on the impact that new policies will have on Humber and our students.

As an active member of the Humber community I have served on committees related to on-campus food services (seriously!), academic integrity, and student retention. I represented faculty on College Council for 4 years and served on the executive committee for 2 years to facilitate feedback from stakeholders that gave President Whitaker greater insight into initiatives supporting Humber’s vision.

As Humber continues to grow, it is increasingly important for faculty to have a voice to shape our general direction, and to ensure that Humber’s commitment to teaching and learning remains the first priority. This is what I plan to do and why I hope you will vote for me!

Thank you, Jeff

Administration Representative

Steve Bellamy

PLEASE ELECT STEVE BELLAMY AS YOUR ADMINISTRATION REPRESENTATIVE ON OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

It’s an exciting time of advancement and renewal at Humber College. These transitions profoundly affect all areas of the College, bringing challenges but also opportunities for innovation and positive change. Much of the decision making that will set Humber’s course as a leading institution for decades to come falls to administrators, including the leaders and managers who work with faculty and staff. We have a strong and dedicated group of administrators who put students first. I am proud to be a member of your team and would be privileged to be your representative on our Board of Governors.

Now in my tenth year at the College, I have worked directly with all administrative areas and served on dozens of committees, sub-committees and working groups. I have a proven track record of success in industry and partnership development.

With experience as faculty, associate dean, and dean, I have worked directly with students, faculty, staff and administration in all areas of the college, including the Registrar’s Office, Finance, Human Resources, Facilities and Planning, Student and Community Engagement, Advancement and External Relations, as well as the Schools, Aboriginal Resource Centre, Research, Centre for Teaching and Learning, and others, on issues ranging from academic planning, strategic enrolment, and program development, to facilities and campus development, human rights initiatives, and strategies for advancement and research.

This broad experience has allowed me to learn so much from all of you. As a large and varied team of administrators, we bring a wealth of talent, perspective and experience to meet the complex needs of our students, faculty and staff. I would be honoured to bring your voices to the board.

Please vote for Steve Bellamy on June 8th (Lake and North) or 9th (North).

Andrew Leopold

PLEASE ELECT ANDREW LEOPOLD AS YOUR ADMINISTRATION REPRESENTATIVE ON OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Andrew Leopold, Humber’s Director of Communications, is running for the position of Administration Representative to Humber’s Board of Governors. And he is super-excited about it.

“Having the chance to become a member of the Board of Governors is my Stanley Cup or my Oscar,” said Andrew. “Every employee works so hard for the institution and it would be an honour to represent my administrative colleagues.”

If elected, Andrew is looking forward to working with the Board on initiatives that support our Strategic Plan, Strategic Management Agreement, enrolment and space planning and student success and employee engagement activities, among Humber’s many other priorities.

Andrew is a Humber champion who continuously promotes the college. He and his team have generated 6,200 media hits and 900 Humber Today stories since joining Humber in 2008.

“The most rewarding part of my job is highlighting our students’ and employees’ successes. Raising awareness of our achievements and showcasing our leadership has helped make Humber the preeminent college in Canada.”

A graduate of Humber’s renowned Public Relations graduate certificate program, Andrew is a member of many college committees, serves on the Bachelor of Public Relations Program Advisory Committee, is a past College Council member and famously began his journalism career as the onsite reporter during the Learning Resource Commons groundbreaking event

The North Campus was transformed from educational institution to country rodeo on Wednesday, May 25 with a western-themed fundraising dinner and silent auction in support of The Canadian Red Cross and the families displaced by the Fort McMurray wildfires.

It was a night to remember with Humber executives, staff and faculty dressed up in their country best, enjoying a delicious meal in The Humber Room featuring Alberta beef, listening to country music performed by The Dukes (consisting of Performing Arts students) and even mechanical bull-riding! Chefs, event coordinators, faculty, staff and students all volunteered their time and energy to maximize proceeds for the event.

“We really wanted to put on an event that was fun and engaging, but that also showcased the heart of Alberta and what they’re all about,” says Susan Somerville, Dean, School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism. “It’s so important to us to support our fellow Canadians who have been affected by the wildfires and are in dire need right now,” she adds.

Total proceeds from the event reached $6,000 with sales from dinner tickets, silent auction and fundraising activities. All funds will be matched by the Government of Canada bringing the total to $12,000 raised for the charity.
