I am pleased to announce restructuring within the Division of Student and Community Engagement. Beginning April 4th, Shelley Charles, Elder and Advisor on Aboriginal Relations, will report to the Vice President, Student and Community Engagement. This restructuring is consistent with federal, provincial and institutional direction recognizing the priority of advancing Indigenous student success and access to culturally relevant education opportunities. I’d like to acknowledge the commitment of Jen McMillen, in her role as Dean of Students, to supporting the important work that has happened to date. The relationship between Student Success & Engagement and the Aboriginal Resource Centre will continue to be integral in supporting our Indigenous students.

Key components of Shelley’s portfolio include:

  1. External Aboriginal Community Relations and Outreach
  2. Advising on Internal Relations and Partnerships
  3. Management of the Aboriginal Resource Centre
  4. Cultural Programming/Education

Shelley is an Alumnus of the Landscape Technology, Horticulture Science Program of Humber College. Her father was an instructor at Humber and her son graduated from the Arboriculture Program in 2010. Shelley has worked extensively in First Nation communities with youth and aboriginal artists with a commitment to preserving cultural knowledge and language. Prior to being appointed Elder Advisor at Humber, Shelley worked with Corrections Canada in multi-level and maximum security institutions in Ontario.

Shelley has studied the culture and ceremonies of the Midewiwin faith keepers for over 30 years, and attained her 3rd Degree and Masters of Indigenous Knowledge from the Seventh Generation Institute in Fort Frances, Ontario.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Shelley for her ongoing work with the college and the significant advancement of the Indigenous portfolio, internally and externally, since 2009.

Sincerely,

Jason Hunter
Vice President, Student and Community Engagement

COLLEGE COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Do you have a vision and some great ideas to share about the planning for the future of the college? Give voice to your thoughts- join the college council.

Download nomination form here

ROLE OF COLLEGE COUNCIL

College Council is the collective voice of the College in that it is an assembly of faculty, support staff, students, and administrators who suggest directions in which the College should proceed. College Council advises the President on those College issues which it considers to be long- and short-term priorities as identified in Humber’s Strategic Plan.

As of 2013, Humber’s Strategic priorities follow three themes:

  1. Strengthening our Polytechnic Identity
  2. Sustained Focus on Teaching and Learning Excellence
  3. Maximizing the Impact of Partnerships

The Council advises the President of the College in matters affecting academic policy, planning, and practice, including, the successful implementation of Humber’s Strategic Plan initiatives.

While it is recognized that the Board of Governors alone can make policy, the Council makes recommendations that may ultimately become policy. If the recommendations the Council makes are not accepted by the President of the College, he or she will be expected to explain his or her reasons.  College policy or business items ultimately proceeding to the College's Board of Governors may appear at College Council at the discretion of the President before final disposition at the Board of Governors.

Please be advised that we have made revisions to the Travel and Other Expense Reimbursement form.  Effective April 1, 2016, only the new version, which is fillable online and auto-calculates and totals, will be accepted for processing (i.e. claims received on the older version or hand-written will be returned to the employee for resubmission).

As a reminder, all claims have to be reviewed (for compliance and accuracy) and approved by the budget holder or their designate as per the College’s Expense and Reimbursement Policy and Procedure. Please ensure that all original and itemized receipts relating to travel and other expense reimbursement are attached to the claim form prior to submission. In the event the original receipt is not available, the Lost Receipt Affidavit form must be attached (i.e. claims with missing receipts will not be processed and returned back). Receipts denominated in foreign currency should be clearly indicated to avoid processing errors.

As an observation, most people tend to submit the reimbursement claim after each event, expense and/or trip taken. As one can appreciate there is considerable effort required in validating and processing these claims thus, from an efficiency point of view, we would like to request that frequency of claim submission be limited to once a month unless the total claim amount exceeds $100.

All Finance forms can be accessed on the Financial Services & Planning website under Forms & Procedures. It is highly recommended that forms be saved locally prior to usage. For further guidance, please reference saving Finance forms under the FAQ section.

We thank everyone for their cooperation and if anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact any Accounts Payable staff.

Thank you,
