The Humber Diversity Committee (HDC) promotes leadership, innovation, collaboration and information sharing on all matters relating to Employment Equity and Diversity within the college. The HDC provides assistance to members of the College community in their roles as effective change agents, strategic planners and leadership developers.

The HDC facilitates the development and maintenance of collaborative partnerships with community agencies to achieve a workforce in which designated group members are represented and participate equitably at all levels and in all occupations at the College.

The HDC was established by the College with responsibility shared jointly by representatives of the Union Locals and the College to act as a consultative body on the development of an Employment Equity Plan.

The HDC is an advisory body that is consulted by the Human Resources Department on policies and procedures of Employment Equity and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

It is recognized that the Human Resources Department will be responsible for approving and implementing the employment equity action plans.

Information Technology Services is pleased to announce that it is once again in a position to offer off-hook service on telephones in learning spaces.

Effective immediately, taking a phone off hook in a learning space for more than a few moments will once again alert Public Safety that urgent assistance is needed.

Restoring the off-hook service is expected to help make for a safer campus by giving instructors a subtle yet effective way to alert Public Safety of issues.

Taking a telephone “off hook” is quick and easy. Simply lift the handset from its cradle and set it aside. An alert will be sent to Public Safety after a few moments.

Unfortunately, it is still not possible to offer the off-hook service outside of learning spaces. You still need to dial x4000 in the event of an emergency.

Know, however, that Humber’s efforts to offer a security alert function in work areas are ongoing and that a solution is expected in the coming weeks.

Should you have any emergency off-hook service questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at ryan.burton@humber.ca or x5290 at any time.

We are pleased to announce that Humber College will introduce two Fall Study Break days in October 2016. This change is consistent with Fall breaks at other GTA colleges and meets the request of the Humber Students’ Federation to provide students with a mid-semester break in the Fall. The break will support students’ mental and physical well-being, as well as the opportunity to seek academic and non-academic support prior to the midterm point of the semester.

The Study Break days will fall on Thursday, October 6th and Friday, October 7th, prior to the Thanksgiving weekend. The College will be open during these days and students will have access to all facilities and services. The University of Guelph-Humber will remain open and continue to run classes.

Martin Luther King Jr. day is celebrated on the third Monday in January. He played a pivotal role in the advancement of human rights throughout the world. Here in Canada, many honour his legacy as it highlighted the civil rights of the Aboriginal peoples, racialized peoples and other disenfranchised groups that were subjected to discrimination practices that prohibited access to employment, housing, education and other services. Mirroring its American counterpart and following in the footsteps of nonviolence resistance, many Canadians took to the streets and marched and sat in civil disobedience in an effort to effect change. One such change came by way of the Canadian government under Lester B. Pearson’s leadership in 1967 that introduced a point’s system selection process for choosing immigrants to enter into Canada. This points system negated policies and practices that had originally kept racialized groups from entering.

Some of Dr. King’s other memorable moments that engendered change include:

  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott In 1955, which was a campaign by the African-American population of Montgomery, Alabama to force integration of the city’s bus lines which led to the desegregation of the transport system throughout America.
  • The March for Jobs and Freedoms in 1963, more commonly known as the “March on Washington”. It was at this march that the famous “I Have a Dream” speech was born and inspired the nation to act on civil rights.

Dr. King’s principles and nonviolence actions led him to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at the age of 35 years.

Today, Canada has worked toward the dream that Dr. King envisioned, that is, many races, cultures and religions residing peacefully. However, Dr. King’s work is not complete.  His famous speech continues to ring true that until all, “men and women everywhere, regardless of color or creed, are equal members of the human family” we must continue to strive to end all forms of harassment and discrimination. This is Dr. Kings legacy.  Do take some time on Monday, January 18, 2016 to ask yourself, “What legacy am I leaving behind to end discrimination in Canada?”

We encourage you to read the inspiring words on the meaning of the King Holiday and learn about its history at the following website address: thekingcenter.org/about-dr-king#sthash
