In the coming weeks you will notice new recycling and waste sorting bins in the hallways and open spaces throughout Humber.

Humber is dedicated to diverting as much material from the landfill as possible, but to be successful we need everyone to do their part!
We’ve invested in new bins and signage on our recycling and waste bins to make it as easy as possible for you to know where things go:

Red = Waste
Styrofoam, foil, food wrappers, plastic utensils

Blue = Recyclables, Plastic/Metal/Glass
EMPTY Pop cans, plastic and glass bottles, coffee cups (No liquid in here please!)

Yellow = Newspaper, magazines, note paper, cardboard
In food areas, notice there are Green organic bins. Scrape your food into those! It will be composted, and turned into soil.

For a longer comprehensive list of the type of material that can be put into each bin, and more on Humber’s sustainability actions, visit us online.

If you have ideas or comments on how to make Humber more sustainable, please contact us through the website.

Questions? Contact Humber’s Sustainability Manager, Lindsay Walker.

On Friday August 17, as many Ontarians are sitting down to dinner, 14 year old Annaleise Carr will be entering Lake Ontario at Queen’s Royal Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake, taking her first stroke towards swimming across the lake.

The Humber Sailing & Powerboating Centre will be supporting Annaleise’s 52.5 kilometre swim across Lake Ontario by providing two sailboats as part of the boat formation surrounding the grade nine student.

 The boats are 31-foot Catalinas named Sunrise and Ceilidh. Humber sailing staff, instructors and the Sailing Club Commodore will skipper and crew each boat.

“We are proud to be part of Annaleise’s crew and to have Humber sailboats supporting her swim across Lake Ontario,” says Karen Tavener, director, Humber Education and Training Solutions. “It’s an honour to be asked to participate. She is a remarkable young lady determined to conquer the challenge. It will be a great thrill watching her do it.”

Individualized Workplace Emergency Response Information

Humber College is committed to providing an accessible living, learning and working environment. In order to comply with the Integrated Accessibility Standards (AODA, 2005), HR Services is working towards achieving a barrier free environment at Humber. The Integrated Accessibility Standards (IAS) is Legislation that outlines accessibility requirements in three areas: Information and Communication, Transportation and Employment. Requirements in each of these areas covered in the IAS will come into effect every year until 2021 and will support Humber in increasing accessibility to all its constituents.

Within the Employment Standard of the IAS, Humber is required to provide individualized workplace emergency response information for employees with disabilities. The purpose of this information is to outline how an employee with a disability, if they require it, will be provided with assistance in the event of an emergency. An emergency can range from an acute event that requires medical attention to an event such as a fire where special evacuation procedures may be necessary.

What is Humber Doing?

Humber has developed a Workplace Emergency Response Plan Template that will assist employees with disabilities and their Managers in determining what accommodation needs the employee may require in the event of an emergency.

Next Steps

In the coming weeks, Nancy Simms, Director, Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity, will be sending information directly to all deans and directors about the workplace emergency response information as well as instructions regarding the process of developing the individualized emergency workplace response plan.

Let’s continue to ensure Humber’s compliance with the AODA
