HELP is happening this week!
January 21 – February 3, 2013

What is HELP?

  • HELP is the Humber Engagement and Learning Profile survey for incoming students.

Who is HELP for?

  • HELP asks incoming first-semester students in certificate, diploma and degree programs to tell us about their preparation for college, their educational and career goals, early opinions about their program and Humber generally, and to identify particular student support services they may use.
  • Participating students are entered into a draw for more than $1,000 in prizes, including money towards tuition and a Tablet Computer sponsored by the Humber Students Federation (HSF).

When does it happen?

  • The HELP survey is open to students this week! (January 21 – February 3, 2013).
  •  The survey is administered online and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Why is HELP important?

  • Students tell us how we can help them be successful at Humber, and receive individualized emails and timely information about Humber’s services based on areas of assistance they identified as beneficial!
  •  Humber Institutional Research creates reports based on student responses to key questions and distribute these to student service areas as well as academic faculty/staff; identifies those who are struggling or at-risk of leaving early.
  • Aggregate data at the program, school and college levels will help us to develop institutional retention strategies that will help more students be successful in their program.

Where can you get HELP info?

  • For more information about the survey or reports please contact Humber Institutional Research.

I would like to announce the following changes for the Office of the Registrar.

Lakeshore Campus – Sarah Peake, Associate Registrar

Sarah Peake joined the Registrar's office team in mid-December, as the new Associate Registrar, Lakeshore. She is replacing Tanis Boak who assumed a new position in the Humber Human Resources department last week. Sarah, will work with Sarah-Jane Greenway when she returns from maternity leave later this summer.

Sarah joined us just before the Christmas holidays and I am proud to say that she survived January start-up. Prior to joining us Sarah worked for Sheridan College as the Manager of Admissions. Previous to that she was the Director of Admissions and Recruitment for Wycliffe College - University of Toronto. She also worked for Georgian College in Corporate Training.

She can be reached at sarah.peake@humber.ca or at extension 3029.

North Campus – Janene Christiansen, Associate Registrar, Fees Reporting and Scheduling

Janene Christiansen is now the Associate Registrar, Fees, Reporting and Scheduling. Based on her role on the project team and the new responsibilities that are emerging this promotion is an extension of the great work she is doing and the new responsibilities she will have when the new system is implemented. The first area in her portfolio that will be changing is the scheduling function. There will be added responsibility brought to the centralized scheduling function so we need to ensure we have the right resources to deal with the changes and develop the appropriate policies so we have been given approval to hire a manager of scheduling. The Scheduling Manger will report to Janene and give direction to the scheduling team and support the academic schools with their scheduling needs. Janene will also be acquiring more responsibility in the Fees, Student Accounts Receivable and Reporting areas given the upcoming process changes affiliated with these functions.

I know you will all support me in thanking her for her tremendous work over the last year on the project and on-going Ministry initiatives. The next several modules of the system project will be led by Janene so she will be more project focused for the next little while.

Rhonda Harrison, Chair, Convocation

Rhonda Harrison will lead the organization of the Convocation ceremonies for the up-coming year and Lucie Moretti will focus on training initiatives related to the new student system implementation. There will be an added requirement for more quality assurance and staff training in the Registrar’s Office over the next year with the new student system implementation and to ensure the required focus is given to both these important functions we have asked Rhonda to assume the event planning function for convocation that normally reside in the Manager of Quality Assurance role, held by Lucie Moretti.

Please join me in congratulating Sarah, Janene, Rhonda and Lucie in their new roles.

Attention full-time and partial load faculty and staff:

Sun Life reviews the utilization of group insurance benefits at regular intervals. From time to time premium rates for these benefits are adjusted either upwards or downwards to reflect the level of usage and cost to provide these benefits.

Effective February 1, 2013 premium rates will be impacted as follows and your contributions and/or taxable benefits will be affected. These premium changes have been reviewed and approved by the Joint Insurance Committee (JIC) of OPSEU, OCASA and College Compensation and Appointments Council.

While the IHI values all types of student venture ideas, the intent of this competition is to promote commercialization and economic development. Ideas or innovations with the potential to be patented and/or to contribute to economic development are most likely to advance to the semi-finalist stage.

1) Application

i) Business plan summary: All applicants must submit a 500 word written business summary to ihi@humber.ca. Applications must address the three criteria below to be considered:

  1. Clear description of the proposed new service, product or innovative technology
  2. How your innovation is an improvement from current products
  3. Revenue model – how will your idea make money?

A stronger application may also include information on some of the following:

  • Description of the applicant(s) experience and education relevant to proposal (or a plan for recruiting the required expertise)
  • The target market and competing products/services
  • The current and projected market demand for the service, product or innovation and/or strategy to reach target market

ii) Create a fun, entertaining (maximum two-minute) video describing why your product is unique.
The video should be uploaded on to You Tube, and applicants must send the link to ihi@humber.ca by the deadline (see below for important dates and deadlines).
Make it fun! Think of this as your first promotional video! The video will be linked to the Innovation Humber Incubator Facebook and YouTube pages, where your friends and family can vote for their favourite innovative business ideas.
Make it clear what your product is! For a great example of an entertaining and informative promotional video, see http://ca.dollarshaveclub.com/.

Need help with your video? Applicants are wholly responsible for the content; however we can help by filming your video. Contact us by January 25, 2013 to schedule a recording session.

2) Selection of Semi-finalists

Semi-finalists will be selected by the Friendly Fire team, based on the commercialization potential of your business plan and the entertainment factor of your video. All semi-finalists will be required to set up a business Facebook page, and promote their idea to friends and family. The businesses with the most “likes” on Facebook will advance to the Final Competition.

3) Selection of Finalists

Eight finalists will be chosen through a social media voting campaign to advance to the competition. The most votes win, so semi-finalists will be encouraged to showcase and share their idea to as many people as possible!

Finalists will have the opportunity to meet with business experts and learn ways to improve their pitch!

On March 9, 2013, all finalists will present their elevator pitch to a panel of expert judges. Finalists will have to convince that their idea has commercialization potential. Judges will distribute $40,000 among the ventures they feel have the most potential.

Important Dates and Deadlines

  • Jan 28, 2013: Submission of 500 word written business summary, and two-minute video (contact the IHI if you need assistance with filming)
  • February 7, 2013: Semi-finalists will be identified1 and the social media campaign will begin
  • February 28, 2013: Competition finalists will be notified2
  • March 9, 2013: Live competition3

FAQ:
Q: Does my business need to be registered?
A: You do not need to register your business for the competition. Students who are awarded funding will be required to register their business before receiving any funds.

Q: I don’t have a Facebook account. Do I need to set one up in order to participate? What about friends and family who want to vote for me but don’t have a Facebook account?
A: There will be other ways to market yourself and for your friends and family to vote for your idea. The websites are being developed, and will be ready to go by the time the semi-finalists have been identified.

Q: Do I need a logo?
A: You do not need a logo for the competition. Students who are awarded funding will be encouraged to develop a logo as part of their branding strategy.

Q: How many semi-finalists will there be?
A: We do not want to put a cap on this number. Any application that shows commercialization potential and submits a good-quality promotional video will be invited to compete at the semi-finalist stage.

Q: What stage of startups will you fund?
A: Again, this will not be restricted. However, applicants with an existing business must clearly demonstrate how funding will allow them to innovate their service/product and improve their sales.

Q: Who will be on the judging panel?
A: There will be 3 or 4 judges; each will be either a successful entrepreneur and/or an innovation expert. The list will be available to finalists before the competition.

Q: I applied to the New Venture Seed Fund competition. Am I eligible to apply to this as well?
A: Absolutely! The only requirement for applying is that you are a current student or graduate of Humber, and that you follow the application process as outlined above. There are no other restrictions to apply.
