In the CCBI’s second Speaker Series event, we’re back with the topic of Social Activism in Street Art on Friday, March 12 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Street art and activism are intrinsically connected and can be seen in examples across history from the Berlin Wall to the Black Lives Matter movement. Through the democratization of public spaces, street art aims to reclaim communities from gentrifying forces, to build back a sense of home for marginalized people, and to propose alternative social structures.

But the questions remain: who is allowed to create public art and who controls the narrative? Is street art itself becoming gentrified? How do we keep the core values of the art form intact?

Joining us for this lively panel discussion are local street artists Elicser Elliot, Bareket Kezwer, Moises Frank (Luvs), Nick Sweetman, and Natalie Very B. The session will be moderated by Parul Pandya. The artists will discuss their process and experience with producing works of art located in the public realm, and their motivations ranging from explicitly political to narratives inspiring growth, community, and acceptance. This discussion creates a dialogue for emerging and mid-career artists about how activism and art are interconnected, and why it’s important to understand and be intentional about one’s participation in creating art in the public realm.

CCBI Speaker Series The Humber College Centre for Creative Business Innovation is launching our CCBI Speaker Series! These free online sessions will feature different subject matter experts from a range of creative disciplines, sharing their years of experience and knowledge with attendees. Join us for the opportunity to ask questions and learn how to advance your career, discover new and innovative trends, and network with industry professionals at all levels.

Centre for Creative Business Innovation (CCBI) Humber’s Centre for Creative Business Innovation (CCBI) is a hub for problem finders, solution builders and innovative creators. We work with your industry to build and then manage cross-disciplinary teams of students, faculty experts and industry partners to help you leverage change and boost business through uncertain times. The CCBI helps businesses and communities reap the benefits of creativity-driven innovation. In an era of digital disruption and growing competitive pressures, creativity is a key driver of competitive advantage and business success. CCBI research projects involve three partners: a community/industry partner, and cross-disciplinary teams of Humber students and faculty. The process begins with a community or industry-based individual or organization looking for a creative and innovative solution to a real-world challenge. Humber students and faculty work alongside the community/industry partner to identify, test, and implement potential solutions.
