Strategies-for-Challenging-Anti-Black-Racism-Part-I

Monday, February 1, 2021
10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Eastern Time
*This webinar will not be recorded*

Facilitators: Adam Benn, Manager Education & Training, and Sacha Ally, Specialist, Humber's Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity.

Anti-Black racism is prejudice, attitudes, beliefs, stereotyping and/ or discrimination that is directed at people of African descent and is rooted in their unique history and experience of enslavement and colonization (Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unity, City of Toronto). Anti-Black racism is not new; it has persisted for hundreds of years. However, recent media coverage of the impacts of anti-Black racism has brought greater awareness to the issue.

This two (2) hour workshop will explore the roots of anti-Black racism in colonialism, and will begin exploring how anti-Black racism manifests through online racial microaggressions. Participants will also explore case studies and explore key theories on anti-Black Racism.

The Principal's Office at Humber Lakeshore Campus, in partnership with the Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness Team, is excited to continue the Principal's Office Wellness Talk Series for Humber students, staff, and the general community.

For January 2021, we have partnered with Humber Indigenous Education and Engagement and Humber LGBTQ+ to present:

  • Dr. James Makokis, Canada's Two-Spirit, Diversity, Indigenous Health, and First Nation Expert
  • Anthony Johnson, LGBTQ2, Two-Spirit, and Diversity Expert.

After travelling across six provinces, one territory, and 14 cities, James Makokis (Cree) and Anthony Johnson (Navajo/Diné) are the first Indigenous, Two-Spirit couple to win The Amazing Race Canada.

In this talk, Representation Matters - Becoming Better Allies, James and Anthony will share their personal transformations, from their early years facing adversity around two-spirit and Indigenous identities to a lifetime of education, transforming them into leaders, activists, and role models. They will explore the impacts of colonialism on Indigenous health and wellness, tips for overcoming challenges and discrimination, and helpful strategies we can all use to build a culture of inclusivity in our lives, institutions, and classrooms.

What is Map the System?

Map the System is a global competition that challenges us to think differently about social and environmental change. Rather than jumping straight into a solution, business plan or an idea to fix problems, Map the System asks us to use ‘systems thinking’ to understand complex social and environmental challenges. Learn more at www.mapthesystem.ca.

What happens in Map the System?

Students will:

  • Develop systems level thinking
  • Formulate ways to visually map a complex system
  • Build research and presentation skills
  • Forge new connections with innovators and changemakers
  • Compete to be the winning Humber team that will present at the Canadian virtual finals
  • Compete to present at the University of Oxford virtual finals and win cash prizes
