What are the opportunities and barriers that exist for seniors when it comes to spending time in a natural space?

Hear from a group nursing students who worked with the Humber Arboretum to conduct a community needs assessment for the local senior population. They will share the findings of their project, which was undertaken as an official placement for their academic program.

ArbTalks at the Humber Arboretum offer free introductions to topics related to gardening, ecology, and sustainability. Feel free to bring your lunch and enjoy a casual learning environment.

How: This event is free but please register in advance using through the Arboretum website to help us plan.

Presenter bio:

Arlo Kempf is the Director of the Master of Teaching Program, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning. Dr. Kempf received his PhD from OISE in 2011, followed by a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011-13) and Visiting Scholar appointment (2013-15) at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Arlo's research interests include anti-racism in education, critical perspectives on educational standardization and neoliberalism in comparative perspective, and decolonizing education.

Arlo is currently the Principal Investigator for a project titled Mitigating Race Bias in Teacher Professional Practices, a study with alternative secondary school teachers in Toronto.

Guelph-Humber fouth year KIN students will be showcasing their final Knowledge Translation Projects as part of KIN*3060: Human Development and Aging. Students have developed a wide range of multimedia strategies to effectively communicate their scientific findings to a general audience. Faculty, staff and students from across the GH and Humber community are welcome! 

Here is just a sampling of what our students have been working on:

  • Is a Keto diet healthy for pregnant women?
  • Does early sport specialization improve or hinder future elite sport performance?
  • What is the best strategy to recover from concussion?
  • Does cannabis exposure impair the developing brain and impact academic performance?
  • Can pairing older adults and young children in social programs prevent Alzheimers disease? 

All student groups will display their projects simultaneously in an open 'expo' style. Please feel free to come by at any point during the showcase to interact with our students, ask questions etc. All are welcome, so bring a friend too.

The second year Event Management Diploma students have an upcoming event called Mitts & Meals. Working with organizations in the Humber community, the Jamestown Food Bank and Youth Without Shelter, there will be a food and mittens/gloves/hats drive on Tuesday, November 26 and Thursday, November 28 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days.

Donations will be accepted outside of the Humber Room (between the Tim Horton's and the Concourse). 

Food banks are in need of peanut butter, pasta, beans and canned vegetables, meats, soups, stews and vegetables. 

Drop by with your donation and you may win some great prizes!

Summer programs abroad at Humber are here for you. Students can earn up to two GNED courses or lower-level breadth elective courses at Humber while studying around the world.

Presenters - 6 projects, 6 minutes each, sharing highlights and findings

The Principal's Office at Lakeshore Campus is excited to launch the inaugural 6 in 6 Speaker Series at Humber College Lakeshore Campus.

The Fall 2019 6 in 6 Speaker Series showcases the interesting Scholarships of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research-based projects from various Humber faculties. The panel, made up of various faculty members from different disciplines, dives into topics that address connectedness and community, learning attitudes and impact on quality, entrepreneurial skills, interior design practices, engaging learners for code and improving knowledge and retention.
