Join us for a screening of the The Lost Bird Project and follow sculptor Todd McGrain as he sets out to create a series of bronze memorials to five birds that are now extinct in North America: the Labrador Duck, the Great Auk, the Heath Hen, the Carolina Parakeet, and the Passenger Pigeon. Follow the two-year journey as the project moves from the tropical swamps of Florida to the rocky coasts of Newfoundland.
Following the documentary, birders Nancy Barrett and Tim McCarthy will share their reflections on the film and connect it to local projects aimed at raising awareness and protecting bird species who are at risk today.
Nancy Barrett is a self-taught wildlife photographer, naturalist, and birder who has felt a keen curiosity for the wonders of the natural world since early childhood. She volunteers with several organizations, learning workshops for groups including the Toronto Ornithological Club and the Friends of SAM SMITH PARK, among others. She also frequently partners with the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre and Fatal Light Awareness Program Canada in contributing to bird and nature-themed exhibits.
Tim McCarthy has been an active birder and committed conservationist for more than 50 years. Throughout this time, he has been committed to the philosophy that it is important to DO something to support our natural world rather than simply view or study it. Tim embodies this active philosophy through his volunteer work with the Toronto Ornithological Club: he runs the annual Whimbrel Watch in Colonel Samuel Smith Park every May and also contributes to the Hawk Watch in High Park each fall.
