Driven by entrenched 18th century social attitudes which blamed the poor for their own poverty, efforts at poverty reduction since the 1960s have been uneven – contradictory at best and punitive at worst. In the past 10-15 years, however, there has been a coalescence of approaches from at least three disciplines – progressive social work practice, economics and human rights law – in seeing poverty elimination as the necessary way forward.

In this lecture, Vince Calderhead will demonstrate how human rights discourses have an important contribution to make in holding governments accountable to their commitments. Particularly in a wealthy country such as Canada, there is no reason not to eliminate poverty.

Teach math? Come and share ideas, best practices and talk about innovations. Be part of a collaborative community supporting student achievement.

This is an opportunity to connect with other math faculty from across the college and discuss common themes and ideas. All interested faculty are welcome.

The topic of the October 24 session is: Is the Pen Mightier Than the Chalk?

For over a decade, tablets have been used at Humber to help foster learning. Some professors love them, some do not, and others are simply curious. Whatever your opinion, we would love to hear from you. In this presentation, we will explore both the pros and cons of tablet technology by sharing our own personal experiences. Find out if tablets are the next step in the evolution of your classroom.

In addition, you will be introduced to the latest Dell 5290 (2-in-1) Tablet now recommended by Humber IT. It is so cool that it makes the Surface Pro look like just an iPad. Just kidding, iPad users are welcome to this fun event as well.

UofGH’s Soka Education Research Initiative on Global Citizenship

Emerging as a radical response to Japan’s militarist education system of wartime indoctrination, Soka, or “value-creating,” approaches have today become one of Japan’s most globally recognized and practiced. Dr. Goulah’s talk examines the presence and role of dialogue in the Soka heritage of education, from Tsunesaburo Makiguchi to Daisaku Ikeda and the Soka schools Ikeda founded in Asia and the Americas. The talk concludes with analysis of aspects of Ikeda’s enacted philosophy that is inspiring Soka-oriented educators to valorize dialogue. Two central ideas are that it is through encounters with others, especially dialogical, that we become fully human, and that the ego-transcending growth encouraged by dialogue provides a basis for lasting, widespread peace in our world.
